How about a tool that converts HTML to XHTML?

Some examples of prior art to give an idea of the scope of the task:

IMHO, I say stick with the more common one's, where operation is well defined. Work on your problem solving, debugging, and language usage skills.

Don't you think that if someone has a really innovative idea, this person would rather use it, instead of giving to some unknown developer, who may or may not be able to develop that idea?
This is not how innovating ideas come...
Be innovating yourself, be creative, be realistic. If you are not yet up to the challenge, learn.

We can't really help you here: we have no idea how much you know, how well you know it, what your skills are, what your interests are.
What I might think of as "innovative" and "interesting", or even "challenging" you might consider dull, boring, trivial, or impossible - I can't tell!
If you are just starting - and it's likely you are - then the worst thing you can do is try something far beyond you capabilities: all that happens is you produce rubbish because you don;t know what you are doing, or become dispirited because it doesn't work and you don't know how or why to fix it!
So get some of the "traditional" student tasks out of the way: they are given to you to teach you the basics in a simple format.
