Automated ui testing and sanddock / sandbar menus

I am trying to put together an automated UI test of an application that uses SandDock, and SandBar for its menus.

I'm using Visual Studio

I am finding little of note when I search on line.

What direction should I take?

What I have tried:

I have tried an element based approach derived from the article I published here, I've tried a recorded Visual Studio CodedUI test and I have tried TestStack.White - but none of these are successful.
