Single thread application on a multi core CPU

My beginner question is this.

Let's say we have a computer with an i5 cpu and we made a single threaded application.

Will the the extra cores be useless for the application, and will it just use only 1 cpu?

Will the operating system split the application process in more than one cpu?

Will speed be any different between a single core cpu and a multi one?
