Installing .NET 3.5 on Windows Server 2008 Standard

I am trying to install .NET 3.5 onto a server with Windows Server 2008 Standard (R1). This is the first step before loading the software I am really after. The only error messages I get are:

[06/22/11,14:03:43] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0': [2] Component Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0' returned an unexpected value.
[06/22/11,14:03:44] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0' is not installed.

Any ideas why this is failing? Thanks for any assistance.
