Once you have installed it, and before you try to run SQL Server, run windows update, which will download and apply SP1 for you.

I cannot install sql server

The message isn't saying "you can't do this" It's just saying "The program you want to install won't work until..."
Unless you are saying that the error is terminal to the Setup process, which is both unlikely and unmentioned in your original post...

Ah - you might have said it was a VS / SQL clash!
I had this myself, then last time, and I can't remember which order I ended up with to get them both in, but I thought is was SQl first, then VS. This suggests otherwise though: http://colinmackay.co.uk/blog/2009/10/11/visual-studio-sql-server-install-order-on-windows-7/
He says you can install VS first, if you make sure it doesn't install any SQL server - but I think I had a problem before with the SQL instalation after VS screwing VS up. (it uses some of SQL for it's internals, I think, and replacing them messes it up)
Your best method may be to take VS off completely, revert to a checkpoint before you put it on, and then install SQL Server first. I seem to remember that that way worked for me.
