Few Questions About JSON

I` a newbie and want to clear my few misunderstandings..
i want to know that what is the best and the worst practices that we can perform with JSON.

can we use json for navigation bar? can we use json for binding the dropdowns or grid?
in which context is json usefull from XML? i have these confusions and want to know about them..

And last but not the least.. i also want to know that from where a NEWBIE can start learning a good json from?
