SS_USERITEM .RC style

This is more of an FYI -- for me. I've seen enough resource code that have a SS_USERITEM style (usually "static" class). How is this to be handled? Via WM_PAINT or does it generate its own WM_ message? I would think it works like BS_OWNERDRAW for the "button" class. The docs seem to stop after telling me what the hex value is and not much else for actually code. Thanks. René
