I fear you just experienced the reason why some people is spending time doing worthless activity like doing backups.
The reason is that one day, the worthless backup become invaluable, but you don't know which day it will happen.
Usually, one combine a few systems to cover all aspects of the problem:
- keep track of changes:

- backup: once set, backups are mostly automated, off line and off site backups are preferred.
Just imagine, what happen if tomorrow:
- your home or office turn to hashes.
- your computer break down.
- a ransomware or virus kill your HDD
