Design patterns are a type of construct; like a t-intersection or round-about. You either recognize them as such, or you don't.

One may be using them and not even know it; it a type of nomenclature that one learns.

Like how to "frame" a house: window patterns like "bay"; door patterns like "double"; etc.

One adds a "software pattern" when one recognizes a need for one; it's usually not a simple add-on / "new feature".
