Most barcode scanners are configured to plug into USB and act as a keyboard, so you need little or no work to integrate them.

It is possible to configure them differently, (to provide a "start" and "end" sequence so you can tell it's a barcode for example) but how to do that depends on the specific manufacturer and (sometimes) model. Talk to the manufacturer - they should provide technical support.
