detail information about "content" attribute used in meta tag of an html page

Dear Friends,
In html page we are useing <meta> tag and in this take we have an attribute call "content".
Example. <meta http-euqiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset="UDF-8">
Now i want to know what is the use of content attribute and how it works? If browser not read this meta tag(interpret) then what is the use? Please reply me soon.
