Filtering a Gridview without using a Dataset

I'm trying to create a filter or a search for a Gridview that holds over 400 records. I would like to be able to filter through the records without have to load all 400 records just to display the few that I'm looking for. I have been reading articles about Dynamic Stored Procedures but I still need to be able to put it all together.
