how to extract information from barcode scanner with arduino

I am an E.C. student and i do not have sound knowledge on how information is stored in website.
I wish to make a project in which arduino is connected to Ethernet shield. I want to read a barcode with scanner, and fetch the information from a website about that product to display it on the screen.

Please guide me on how can the arduino fetch this information.

And also, which is better, arduino or raspberry pie for this?
