Surprised no one's mentioned them yet, but Jetbrains IDE's are available for Linux, so you can get IntelliJ Community for free.
I would also recommend the rather cheap Webstorm if you decide to do any Javascript/Node development.
JB is also working on a C# IDE, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Just pick an open source project that you use/are interested in and go for it. Start by looking at issues in their tracker and maybe help out in an organizational manner until you start to understand the project better. I haven't seen too much in Java out there, and my preferences would probably be to stay away from Java anyway. VSCode is not too bad for c/c++, or use Atom. They both work for many different languages.
 If you really want to get into Linux development, then you MUST choose either EMACS or vim for your editor. (vim is the correct choice)

What the Elephant??
I'm trying to debug some code, but Windows update comes up with it's "we're going to restart! Too bad you can't stop me!" thing so I save everything and go have a drink. A while later I come back and try and resume debugging but my localhost won't start up. And then I can't find my IIS console shortcut on my desktop. And the inetsrv folder in C:\Windows\System32 is empty.

Anyone else seen this? I've gone back into "turn Windows Features on or off" and renabled everything, and it's now evidently fetching some files from windows update.
I'll keep you posted...

Did you go to Anniversary update?
There are hidden features which are removed to force you to buy them.
Company I work for had this issue and has not gone up to Anniversary update for this reason yet.
However, I'm not sure IIS is one of those items.

Oh, look, I googled "anniversary update iis" and got a reddit where numerous people saying same thing

I thought I'd updated to Anniversary Edition (and seriously Microsoft: pay someone to think up decent names, please) but evidently I hadn't.
I have AE on my office machine and no problems there.
Funnily enough I searched far and wide for others who had the same issue. My Googling skills (and possibly my Binging skills - ahem, Microsoft) are obviously rusty.
