If this is a custom platform - which it must be, because Windows Mobile doesn't run on x86 processors - you should have the CE shared source code. That will tell you, if you look at the source file and line mentioned, that you've passed an invalid parameter into SHGetFileInfo. Specifically, either the path is NULL, the pointer to the SHFILEINFO structure is NULL, or you've passed an unexpected size in the cbFileInfo parameter.

Iam using CEPC with x86 procesor booted with wince 5.0 image.I need to open a folder selection dialog in my application and for this purpose i have used the following code

On compiling this code iam able to run the application successfully in emulator.But while running the application in a device it got strucked at a parameter checking in api.cpp file.This happens when SHBrowseForFolder is issued.I don't know how SHBrowseForFolder links with the function SHGetFileInfo.What parameters should i pass to overcome this problem.

You may find that your problem is simply that the debugger has stopped due to the assertion, and simply issuing the Run command will cause your program to continue running.
It appears to be a bug in the implementation of SHBrowseForFolder. Consult the people who developed the platform - this might be another team or your OEM - about getting it fixed.
Line 177 of browse.cpp (in the same folder as api.cpp) calls SHGetFileInfo, passing a NULL as the first parameter. The aim seems to be to get a handle to the system small-icon image list. The code could instead pass a single backslash (i.e. _T("\\")) as the first parameter, or even an empty string, which will prevent the assertion.

Is there any way to use .NET remoting in .net compact framework?
I read somewhere that this was not possible. I'm currently creating an application, and it works with remoting, but the client should be ported to Smartphone or PDA or some other handheld. Will I have to rewrite my entire remoting layer? Hope my question makes sense... :->

You can use SOAP on the device. But the Remoting namespace isn't available in the Compact Framework. Tcp sockets are also available. But are you talking about accessing an object on a network from the device? Or an object on the device itself?

Fone Coupons Overview
Fone coupons is a concept for a mobile coupon business. The business is cetenered around a mobile coupon software application in which coupons are delivered electronically to mobile phones. Fone coupons will also help to eliminate fraud, be able to give the coupon managers better statistics and also use process coupons quickly.
Fone coupons allow a coupon distributor to better manage their coupon distribution operation. Fone coupons also make it easier for the customer to take advantage of “coupon clipping” saving money on their shopping & less time on searching for coupons that they can make use of. The goal of Fone Coupons will be to replace paper based coupon clipping for a more streamlined & manageable approach to coupons programs.
How does Fone Coupons work?
A coupon distributor will be able to setup any number of coupons on the system with all the relevant information relating to the product, amount of discount & expiry date. These coupon will then be ready to be sent out to mobile phones/
Coupon subcribers or customers to a store can be alerted immediately about coupons that may be of interest to them. The customer can then receive these coupons to their phone; coupons will look the same the paper counter part with barcodes & a picture.
Once receieved the cusomter can quickly view the mobile fone coupon book & buy a product; at the checkout the cusomter scans the coupon on from the mobile phone & the item or items will be discounted.
Once the coupon has been scanned, the “Lakeview” back office will be notified that this cusomter has scanned used the coupon & the necessary administration on the coupon is done automatically.
Users of the fone coupons:
Fone coupons can be used by all customers with a mobile phone.
The fone coupon system backend will be used by: coupon distributors, & manufacturers.
Fone Coupon Components
The components that make up fone coupons are as follows:
Website
The fone coupons website is split into two sections:
· Fone coupons information portal
The information portal will be a standard website describing Fone Coupons.
· Adminstration area for coupon administration
The administration area
The administration area is the heart of Fone Coupons. The following subsections make up the administration area:
· Coupon campaign manager
The management of coupons will be done by store owners or marketing companies, coupons can be created and uploaded to the system ( or generated by the system, with manufacturers typing in the unique barcode ID number) & then a coupon camapaign can be created and monitored through this interface.

SMS interface
An SMS search interface will allow a customer to search for coupons that might be of interest to the customer. Any text entered in will be sent to the backoffice where a search for a product coupon or store coupon book can be sent to the phone.

A subsystem that generates coupons & coupon books
· A fone coupon is an image with an encrypted barcode attached, the barcode is the unique identifier used to track each coupon sent to each customer.

The barcode manager is an ancillary component and is also a part of Fone Coupons. The barcode manager allows product manufacturers to send to distributor barcodes associated with a product to distributors. These barcodes are then used by the distributor to create fone coupons & fone coupon books.
A manufacturer uploads a barcode & product description to the portal (or generates one on the portal itself), an note is sent immediately to the coupon distrubutor that a new product barcode has been added to the portal, the distributor can now use that product barcode to create a fone coupon & fone coupon campaign based on this barcode.
Deliverables
Fone Coupons Prototype :
The first working deliverable for fonecoupons will be a proof of concept of system with all the key features working.
Two scenarios will be demonstrated:
Scenario 1 - A customer searches for coupons
A customer will search for a product using SMS on her mobile phone, in this scenarios she is looking for a product she’s looking to buy a producte in the supermarket. A reply from Fone Coupons will be sent to her phone to say that a coupon for that product exists; she is then asked if she would like the coupon. She responds yes. A coupon with the image of product with the barcode is sent to her phone.
She then goes to the supermarket & takes the product to checkout, the product is scanned along with the fone coupon. The item is discounted by the amount stated on the coupon.
In the Fone Coupon backoffice that coupon is marked as been used, all details regarding the sale of the product are recorded including time/date bought, and added to the history of products bought by this customer. This information is available at the backoffice for viewing by the relevant parties.
Scenario 2 – Creating a coupon campaign from start to finish
A product manufacturer in Hong Kong uploads a number of barcodes & product descriptions to the Barcode portal.
An email is then sent to the distributor(s) of those products, the distributor then enters coupon management portal & sees that new product barcodes have been added to the system. The distributor can choose any number of products with which to create a coupon campaign with.
A new campaign can then be created by the coupon manager and to this campaign products can be added, by selecting each product including ones added by the supplier. Coupons are generated & can be sent to customers imediately.

Unlike on the desktop, .NET Compact Framework 2.0 can actually run CF 1.0 applications, so you don't need both runtimes installed. "Windows CE 4.21" indicates that the device is running Windows Mobile 2003 SE. If the device has a touchscreen, it's a Pocket PC Phone, while if the screen doesn't respond to tapping, it's a Smartphone, in Microsoft's terms.
.NET CF 2.0 does not support Smartphone 2003. If you have a Smartphone, you need CF 1.0.
So, the file you need for Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, assuming you have VS2005 installed, is in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SmartDevices\SDK\CompactFramework\2.0\v2.0\Windows CE\wce400\armv4\NETCFv2.ppc.armv4.cab.
For Smartphone 2003, the file is installed at %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\CompactFrameworkSDK\v1.0.5000\Windows CE\wce400\armv4\netcf.all.wce4.armv4.cab. Note that this is not updated by VS service packs and is the RTM version which doesn't work. You should grab the .NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3 Developer Redistributable[^] and use the file from there.
Visual Studio 2005 should always deploy the right version when you debug. End-users may find it easier to use the "End-User Redistributable" obtainable from www.microsoft.com/downloads/[^].

recently I am searching for availabile 3d engines that work on Windows CE, for prototyping a library for Windows Mobile 4.2 and 5.0 would be enough. (So D3D seems not to work, since it's only available for the 5.0's .NET CF, isn't it?)
I found some stuff like Quark3D and PocketGL, but there is no free source for a quick trial of the library, etc.
Are there any "field reports", is anyone familiar to some engines? Experiences? Suggestions?
My needs are quite simple: Only simple polygons with some texture, e.g. a flat polygon with 6 corners. No spheres, no circles, etc...
I am open mind to C++ and .NET CF solutions!
If there is no little library that fits my needs at aöö, I will have to try to use GDI+ for that task.

I've installed the Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK and have the form factors available in the device manager, but now how do I set it as the default device, or deploy it to the emulator? The only choice when staring a new project or deployment is Pocket PC 2003.

That depends on what development tool you're using. The Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK only associates with Visual Studio 2005 - you'll never see it in Visual Studio 2003, for .NET development, or in eMbedded Visual C++. VS 2003 will at least deploy to a Windows Mobile 5.0 device (although it will deploy too much, placing DLLs from the Compact Framework in the application folder), but eVC cannot debug on Windows Mobile 5.0. You need VS2005.
If you have at least VS2005 Standard Edition, you should see Windows Mobile 5.0 as an option when creating a project. To add support to an existing project, go to Build/Configuration Manager, then under Active Solution Platform, select New. Select Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK in the top list, a working platform in the bottom, and click OK.
If you need to use the WM 5.0 emulator with VS2003, you can select the 'DMA' connection in ActiveSync's Connection Settings dialog (it's in the list with the serial ports), then start the emulator from Device Manager, then right-click it and select Cradle. That will get the emulator connected to ActiveSync. Then treat it as if it were a real device that's connected.

Thanks. I was trying to convert an existing project (PocketPC 2003) but saw the WM 5.0 options when creating a new one, so I just moved everything over (it wasn't a larger project yet).
Now the problem is when I try to debug and the deploy step fails saying an emulator is not installed.
BTW: VSTS 2005 Developer Edition with C#.

This is related to event programming for a pocket pc 2002 application..…here I m listening to a event using the WaitForMultipleObjects() call…also ther r 2 events ITC_APP_EVENT_RIGHTSCAN , ITC_APP_EVENT_LEFTCAN e for the right btn and the left button on a pocket pc device.
We have 2 pocket pc devices ..1st with Win CE 3.0 and the 2nd has Win CE 4.2….
On 4.2 device my exe works fine
On 3.0 device when I run the same exe…it does not pick the event for the button press (button on the right side of the device)
I checked the registry I found that ITC_APP_EVENT_RIGHTSCAN event was not present in the registry of device 3.0. But the same event was present in the 4.2 device's (WIN CE 4.2) registry
So I added this event in the registry of 3.0 device…but still it does not pick the event, the event I think does not get signaled (i.e the WaitForMultipleObjects() call does not work –).
Is it that the WIN CE 3.0 might use a different event other than ITC_APP_EVENT_RIGHTSCAN?
If that's the case than wher can I find the correct event for the button press event. I checked settings..but nothing I found

When you move a dialog (or a CWnd object) your dialog's background will be repainted. It make some unsmooth effects when you have to move your Window too much times (for example you build a drop down window).
Have any solutions for this problem ?

This isn't an easy question to answer, because it depends on how your application is structured. Fundamentally, you need to minimize the amount of painting you do.
If you implement a WM_PAINT handler to paint the dialog's surface yourself, you should look into the GetUpdateRect or GetUpdateRgn functions to determine the area of the surface which actually needs to be repainted, and only perform painting operations that affect this area. (Windows clips painting to this area anyway, so any painting operations which go outside this area simply waste time). You can find out whether a rectangle will be drawn using the RectVisible function. Alternatively, use IntersectRect to find out if any part of one rectangle is within another (and the area that is within both), RectInRegion to find out if any part of a rectangle is in that region, or PtInRect and PtInRegion to check whether a point is in the rectangle or region.
If doing your own painting, it may be better to do as much painting as possible with one set of graphics objects rather than constantly swapping between different objects (for example, if you want two black lines and a red line, select a black pen, draw the two black lines, then select a red pen and draw the red line, rather than drawing the red line in between the two black ones).
If you're overpainting the entire background of the window, consider implementing a handler for WM_ERASEBKGND and returning TRUE. This prevents some flicker generated by Windows painting the window background with the default background brush, then your painting code painting the actual desired result over the top.
If you're not doing your own painting, consider reducing the number of controls on your dialog. When Windows has an invalid region on the screen, it has to generate a WM_PAINT for every window that intersects the invalid region. The overhead can cause the overall painting operation to take a long time. You should ensure that any controls that aren't visible because another control is obscuring them are actually hidden (call ShowWindow with the SW_HIDE flag). If these are controls that are part of the dialog template, hide any controls not initially active in the template.

CreateEllipticRgnIndirect
CreatePolygonRgn
CreatePolyPolygonRgn
CreateRoundRectRgn
So how can I create my own custom region for my dialog (for example a heart shape region) (in Windows CE)?
I just mean custom region.
Do you have any solutions for this proplem ?

You'll have to build a region from rectangles using ExtCreateRegion. I'm not honestly sure if that will work either, but that's the one region-manipulating function that exists on CE.
