Very good point +5
First of don't see yourself as a VB.NET developer, see yourself as a software developer instead.
A company doesn't just want to hire someone who knows the syntax and libraries a language offers, they want someone who can write beautiful, functional, maintainable code, as it's far more important.

Knowledge of design patterns and unit testing is a big plus. Where I work this is a requirement to even get to an interview, and I can imagine it's the same for most other software companies.

Knowledge of the "hot" technologies (WCF, WPF, WF, LINQ, Sharepoint ect.) and mastering more than one language is a plus, and shows your future employer that you're capable and willing to expand your knowledge.

Certificates can also help you get an interview, but once you've gotten to the interview that peice of paper wont help you, the knowledge you've gained while studying for it, might very well help you though.

I don't know what country you are in but you will probably find it even harder to get a job over here (UK). There may be a shortage of developers in certain areas, but unless you have good strong experience you stand little chance of even getting your CV read. If you really want to get into IT then you will need to start at the bottom (take any local job) and spend a few years getting some good experience.

Not a bad idea, my 5. Participation in Open Source or other projects without getting paid may also help.

I have a sneaking suspicion also that this diploma will not be worth the paper it's printed on.
