In general it's better if you expose the functionality that you need through web services and have the mobile devices access the information through those services instead of exposing your database. Using web services will also add a layer of insulation so that you can potentially make changes to your database and would only need to change the service implementation appropriatly such that the mobile applications are unaffect.
Since you are targetting a mobile device you may want to consider what will be done when a connection cannot be established. Will the application just not work, or will you have offline functionality too. If you will have offline functionality then you may want to consider making your application what Microsoft calls a "Smart client." More information on that can be found in Microsoft's Patterns and Practices pages.
I know you said you are new to mobile development, but you've not stated your comfort level with development in general. If you need more guidance on how to do what I describe let me know and I can be more detailed.

Hi...well actually im not a developer. I am student and looking for a good project to do. I was thinking if i get a snapshot or some kind of national id, then using some wireless connection with the nearest server, i should be able to extract information from that server. Off course there is a touch of distributed system as well.

I`m trying to set width of scrollbar for System.Windows.Form.Panel control. I can't find any native or unmanaged code to do so. Has anybody got solution to this problem?
I have found this article, but i think it's not good solution. Is there maybe any other control on which I can set scrollbar size?
Thanks

Hi ,
I have made a application which on installation(using setup CAB proj) installs two short cuts. One in "programs folder " and other in " start menu". The start menu shortcut has a command argument as i want a specific part of app to run when application is started from "startmenu" and when started from "Programs folder" i want the app to run in normal mode. Now, both my requirments are working fine as long as application is not already running. If app is already running(in background), and i start it from "start menu", the arguments are not being processed. Here is the code i have written to process the command arguments.
void Main(String[] args)
{
if (args != null && args.Length > 0)
{
if (args[0] == "something")
{
//do something specific
}
else
{
//run the normal mode(default form1).
}
----
so what i want to know is if this Main() method called when the application is already running in background and its reactivated using the short cut in "start menu". If not then while reactivating, which events are fired, and which one i can use to process the command arguments? I have checked that Activated and OnFocus events don't give the command arguments.
Please suggest some solution. Thanx.
Sunit.

Hello !
I need to learn how I can read data from usb connection with PDA ? my device is belonged to hid class type. I connect my hid device to my PDA via usb connection.
|
|
|
|
|
It would be helpful if you disclosed the operating system that your PDA is running.
|
|
|
|
|
Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC but it has no usb host capability however its processor supports.
|
|
|
|
|
That means that your task is going to be paramount to writing a new driver for the USB controller in your device in addition to writing a driver for the deivce to which you would like to communicate. Are you familiar with creating and registering COM classes?
|
|
|
|
|
I implemented c# based program which works on my laptop. I analyze the protocol of my peripheral device and I have achieved to send request to my device and get necessary data. But I could not do same thing in my PDA because my PDA has no USB host functionality. but my PDA's processor supports usb host functionality.I have ipaq hw6915. I have no experience with com classes.

As I practice with Visual Basic I would like to also work with a gratis copy of Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite. I have a project in mind that would launch an app when the mobile phone rings. What coding/library exists that could be leveraged in this instance? Looking for some guidance on how to proceed from this point. I am a beginner

Take a look at the "State and Notifications Broker." You can use it to trigger actions when certain things happen, including th ephone ringing.

I wrote a Message on 20 June 2009 pertaining to Phone Book
I am using Nokia 2600c-2. I have developed an application and uploaded it to http://mombasa.250free.com/ Can someone log to http://mombasa.250free.com/ Click Phonebook link, the software will download to games folder. The phone automatically prompts to open the application, click yes. it will open the phone book if you allow application to read data 3 times. Press sync to start uploading, by allowing the application to edit and add new data in Gallery. when uploaded waiting for server connection is done, the phone book will close.
Exit http://mombasa.250free.com and open Applications folder, games, and then open phonebo... Allow application to read Data 3 times, allow application to edit and add new Data, it will start to upload and then sync. When uploaded, and waiting for server connection click done. The phone book will close. Exit Games
Open Gallery folder, images and you will find a Text file called phonebo... Open it and you will view all the contacts that were copied from the phone book.
How can I upload this text file to a database in a server and does any one have an idea when Sun will release JSR 230?

Rather than down vote your message, may I offer a suggestion. Consider the implications of what you are asking. Why would anyone even dream of following these instructions, with no knowledge of what damage such actions may cause.

I hope you read the message I wrote on 20 June 2009 pertaining to Phone Book.
I understand the issues you are raising. Maybe the question I should have asked is: How can I upload a Text File in the Images folder of Nokia 2600c-2 to a database in a server?
Any idea?

No, what relevance does it have to this issue?
As to your second question, I'm afraid I don't know offhand. I guess you need some connection from the phone to the server, plus some software on the phone that can send the data to the server, and some code on the server to transfer that data to the database. So that means either using Google to find a ready made package that will do this, or write some code yourself.

I am writing an app for Pocket PC that must concatenate several small wave files and play the result (text-to-speech). Loading the files from disk before concatenating them is too slow, so I decided to embed them by generating a class that includes each wave file as a byte array.
static byte[] aa_aa = {80, 100, 200, ...};
I assumed that this would make accessing them much quicker. It works fine if there are only a few, but when I have all 6 megs of them embedded in the class, when the app gets to the point of accessing one of these, I get a TypeLoadException. So I thought maybe it was because they were all declared static and it was trying to load all of them. So I rewrote it so that each byte array was in it's own class.
public class aa_aa
{
public byte[] bytes;
public void aa_aa()
{
bytes = {80, 100, 200, ...};
}
}
This way the byte arrays should only be instantiated when there is a new object of that class. Unfortunately, I am still getting the TypeLoadException whenever this class is used. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get around this?

I solved it. The problem wasn't with anything I posted here. It was in the code to pull out the resource. Basically, I had a switch statement to get an object from a string.
switch (resource)
{
case "aa-aa":
return new aa_aa().bytes;
case "aa-ae":
return new aa_ae().bytes;
....
}
The problem was that there were too many case statements. I didn't know that was possible. I changed it to use if statements instead it works fine.

I write as a novice working my way through the MSDN beginners section on programming. I've looked ahead to more advanced sections and do not see the connection to what I intend. I've been given Visual Studio Team Suite 2008 which I understand to be highly popular among developers. I have a mobile project in mind and might like to trade remote access to the app in exchange for some coding along with explanations.
This thing retails at $1600 and so it was my thought that this arrangement might be desirable to someone who would rather not give up that kind of cash in this economy. Looking for an informed opinion on whether this is a reasonable proposition. Many replies welcome.

Hello Guys,
Although I wasn't lucky getting any replies for my last question I asked two days ago, but I will ask this question hoping that somebody will help.
My question is about user notifications on WinCE 5 devices, does this feature really depends on the device manufacturer's OS image rather than the core OS features? What I found is that user notifications work just fine and as expected on some WinCE devices but not on others; I have 2 devices, one has WinCE 5 and the other WinCE 4.2, the one having WinCE 5 doesn't launch the application scheduled to run at specified time by it self, it only launches that application if the scheduling time passed and I change the system time manually from Date/Time settings found in control panel.
So, am I missing any thing about user notifications on WinCE devices?
Thank you guys for any help you provide.
Regards,
Ayman

I need to have an application display a login form when the device has been idle for a period of time. I am new to mobile development so I am unsure how to do this.
I have tried to use the GetIdleTime() function and the idle time keeps incrementing even when the device is not idle.
I call the function with a button click and everytime I click the button the time has incremented even when I do it repeatedly. Why does the time increase when it it not idle? I assume since I am getting values the device supports this.
I am using a Samsung Saga. The Visual Studio emulator stays 0 all the time.

hi
how i can print from ppc (windows mobile) to usb printer
that connect to him ?
(the printer is connect to the terminal (ppc) in usb connection)
thank's in advance

There's no native support in Windows Mobile for printing. you will need to see if the vendor of your printer has an SDK for you to interact with it.
