They've got a lot more ridiculous patents pending, hopefully to shove the same spike up the patent trolls' backsides -- even if a patent is only pending, the "invention" is locked off.
If that's the case, then it's a great thing they're doing, and they deserve a lot of thanks from a lot of people in computing & IT.

You could have left it at
it would be better if the patent office had a slight clue.

Why don't they set it free to all except those who have a history of patent trolling? Go after them for big bucks...!!!
Sudden Sun Death Syndrome (SSDS) is a very real concern which we should be raising awareness of. 156 billion suns die every year before they're just 1 billion years old.

I see different things in this story...
On one side there is IBM - where probably, the fact of the patent wasn't a in the main stream (or they were not giving it up so easily), but pushed (again probably) by lawyers, themselves not that knowledgeable about history of email and features around it, but felt then need to protect the boss...
On the other hand there is the patent office, getting a large sum of money for do the search and all they do is to run a small software to lookup patent registry by keywords, but never step out to the real world - which actually render all the patenting system to a tool to bully creativity...
In any case, kudos to IBM to show the right way, when it became clear a patent is only for trolling...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

Now, a team of researchers has developed a new method to produce e-Plants, in this case getting a rose (Rosa floribunda) to produce its own wiring and even supercapacitors. Yes, Bill. It still smells sweet.

That article is in competition for most the misleading clickbait headline!

The theoretical properties of such a computing machine, including its exponential boost in speed over electronic and quantum computers, have been well understood for many years – but the Manchester breakthrough demonstrates that it is actually possible to physically create a NUTM using DNA molecules. 640 base pairs should be enough for everyone

Well it can't be any more impractical than a quantum computer.
(yes I know the spacing on this is bugged, I reported it about 3 months ago[^].)
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Aleksey Shipilëv, performance and OpenJDK developer at RedHat, has filed a new JEP draft to create a no-op garbage collector: that is, a GC that doesn't actually reclaim memory. Because they really just wanted C?

Isn't a garbage collector that doesn't collect garbage just the French on strike again?

I thought the last frontier in Java performance was for Oracle to produce a secure version.

“Whiteboard” interviews are widely hated. They also discriminate against people who are already underrepresented in the field. I could code without Google, but why would I?
OK, maybe with Bing.

No need. You can search StackOverflow from the SO site.

The software giant has long been criticized by Windows 10 users for its aggressive approach to applying updates, and it’s introducing some new options to prevent annoying reboots. "We also heard that unexpected reboots are disruptive if they happen at the wrong time." Ya think?
