I think the reality is more that we are living in a post software of any kind world. We don't really want software - we want the service part. The sooner the industry realises we are more like roadies than rock stars the better

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has followed up his lengthy inspirational memo on Microsoft’s future with a harsh dose of reality, promising layoffs of up to 18,000 employees over the next year.
In a brief e-mail to Microsoft employees this morning titled “Starting to Evolve Our Organization and Culture,” Nadella explained that the “strategic alignment” of Nokia Devices and Services will account for approximately 12,500 professional and factory layoffs. Microsoft is currently in the process of the first 13,000 layoffs, for which employees will be notified over the next six months and offered severance packages.
But who will build all the Windows Phones they (aren't) selling!?

Earlier today, Microsoft announced the biggest layoffs in the history of the company, axing 18,000 employees. Out of those 18,000, 12,500 employees are a part of Nokia that came under the leadership of the software giant. However, that's not the only interesting bit in the email sent by Satya Nadella to its employees, he mentioned "select" Nokia X product designs will switch to Windows Phone. Microsoft has a really cool feature in the pipeline for Skype, and with a bit of luck it will be released in 'preview' later this year. At WPC in Washington, D.C., they showed it off in front of 14,000 partners. If you were not able to watch the keynote this morning but would like to see the real-time Skype translation demo, we were able to record it while we watched the keynote. A little ungefähr gleich, but there is potential. No hovercrafts, nor eels.

I mostly agree; but if I have to do buzzword compliant web dev again node would at least let me use VS instead of either having to fight with bean counters to buy me a new tool[^]  or to use an editor although more colorful is less capable than what I learned to program on nearly 20 years ago[^].

Meh. IDEs are overrated. I use VS on Windows and vim on Linux and don't see any difference in productivity between the environments.

I’m in an intriguing position on this subject, because I’m not a developer anymore. I haven’t launched Xcode since last December. Every time I’m out socially with software developers (which is often; I’ve made many good friends in that line of work, and I have no desire to lose them), at least one person asks me if I miss the job. Microsoft has a massive ecosystem of devices around the world and at its Windows Partner keynote, Tony Prophet, stated that the company has 1.5 billion devices running Windows around the world. That figure is representative of all Windows devices including desktop PCs and Windows Phones. Yeah, that's what I heard: they're totally doomed.
