My smartphone ruthlessly kills every application left in the background so it is super energy saver. I spend the spared energy and more instead of it.
I hate when scrolled to content in the browser, left it alone, going back and it reloads the page, goes to top.
I hate that I have yet to find an email client that has decent search capabilities AND works all the time.
I hate when the energy-saving-maimed background processes fail to update my calendar so at first opportunity they sync nothing to my phone where originally I registered the appointment.
I hate when the energy-saving-maimed clipboard loses everything a hour later.
Productivity-wise a 2000's Pentium system is still lightyears ahead of anything mobile. Just there is no business in writing the software to be cramped into those systems, and there is no business in replacing the old HDDs with UFS SSDs.
And there are digital nomads getting paid who "work" on mobile...

Peter Adam and charlieg I’m not a fan of smartphones either. However smaller screen size helps against eye strain when you have to do something “on a computer” other then writing code ( browse the web, read and post comments on forums etc. )

I think it boils down to resistance, as in ohms.
Shrinking the transistor didn't just mean packing more into a smaller space, it also meant much smaller bits of metal being involved. Physics translates that to meaning exponentially less energy to manipulate the gates.
It'd materially be even better except that we've eaten up a bunch of the gains with bloated insane crap like js.

I know a lot of you own power tools, so I'm pretty sure someone else here has run across this issue, and hopefully, found a solution.
Many power tools have a (usually black) rubbery insert in the handle for comfort and grip.
After a few years it starts to break down and gets sticky.
What can we do to avoid the ugly black stains I have on my hands?

If you don't care about it being rubbery you might try epoxy'ing it? A thin layer.

The funny thing is this happens on ferrari and maserati dash controls from the early aughts.
You can buy new ones, or you can sand them down and clear coat them.
Obviously that's not going to work with the rubber, but basically the problem is a similar one, and I imagine the solution would be similar. Rubber makes it tricky though. Could you coat it in a thin layer of leather or vinyl? Contact vinyl might work. You'd need a heat gun to work it into the contours but with some patience I bet it could work.
However, with the effort involved, depending on the tool it might be more time/cost effective to get a new one.

Usually, when I work with power tools, I have multi-coloured stains on my hands. Black ones doesn't bother me more than the rest.
On a more serious note, conformal coating spray might work reasonably well. Never tried it though.

I've had this happen with as pair binocular with a 'rubber' coating and a rechargeable power pack.
What is it that these coatings/casing are may of that they break down after a number of years?
Is this deliberate built-in obsolescence or just they didn't think people would still be using their products after so many years?
