I guess I am getting cranky in my old age, but I have laid down the law in my house. The next animal will be mine. I've always wanted My elaphanting dog. Now while I whine and grumble keep in mind the context - I have raised 11 children, 3 grandchildren, a few rentals, and some boomerangs - somehow they always manage to leave their pets with me. As I type this, the only dog that actually belongs to me is whoop whooping at the door (and it's a nice day). I have a cat in the house - not donated. I have a rodent dog - donated. I have a golden retriever - donated.
Am I enabling behavior?
ps That was a rhetorical question.

Sorry ober. I've never bought into the fur-whatever mindset. Do I like my pets? Sure. But after 11 children 7 combat tours between two sons, another son that jumps out of perfectly good airplanes (airborne), 10 grand kids, etc - the furry types are just critters and a general PITA. I pay for their food, vet bills, and when they get to EOL, I have to pay for that as well.
Hankey - no more animals until the rat dog, the golden and the collie pass

We have four dogs as it is so we don't get donations. It also helps that we have no family members living nearby.

That's my sign and exact situation.
I have a large rough coat collie (think Lassie) who is up in age and the hips are going. I have a golden getting up in age and the hips are going. I cannot wait to see those vet bills.
Oh I have a rat terrier mix breed mistake in evolution that will probably outlast me. But if she goes, I'll put her in a plastic trash bag and into the trash.

Interesting coincident. I just visited Petco for the first time in several years. Wanted to look at aquariums. Not sure I want to commit, but toying with idea. As a rule, I avoid having pets (the mammal type) because of their dependency and my commitment. I do have wild pets in my backyard, that I help support with bird seed and bread crumbs. I have a Bluejay, Mockingbird sharing a huge bushy cedar tree and a bunch of smaller wrens. I have a number of anole lizard families sharing patio, porch, back fence. They eat live insects, including mosquitoes.
Dogs are a different kind of pet. They have a tendency to want family life. Love them, but wife is allergic so no pet dogs or cats.
