The phrase "cat employer" is an oxymoron. The term employer implies that the cat would pay you, which is obviously a ludicrous notion.
Cats have clients who pay for their services.

I've installed SSMS on the Surface, and I can get into the prod DB, no hassle.
But when I try to access the test DB it fails. It can find the server on the servers list, but can't retrieve he DB's or login - but it used to work on the Wookietab, and I've changed nothing. I've checked all the obvious stuff (login data, port 1433, ...) but I can't even find a login failure in the SQL logs on the desktop.
OK, let's take a break from that and try crochet or something instead ... maybe it'll sort itself out tomorrow.
Bah! Computers - who'd have 'em?

Borrowing from Apple much?

Not "borrowing"; "trying to emulate", and failing badly.

When it arrived, did you check it for latent damage (someone needs to do QC).
The approved procedure (best for iProducts but it will work here, too) is to hold the device vertically; gently lower it into a large pot of boiling saltwater. Now observe carefully: if it floats it was OK, otherwise, it was clearly defective.

The Salt Water Check is only recommended for Apple and Huawei products - Microsoft ones need to be lowered into warmed DDT to kill the bugs...

Salt water is very bad for electronics.
Boiling oil is safer.
