What they're objecting to, specifically, is paying to use copyrighted material when training AI. This is interesting because anyone can borrow a book from a library and "train" themselves without paying the copyright owner. The counterargument for AI would have to be bandwidth. A trained person can handle one client at a time, whereas an AI program is easily replicated to handle a large number.

With an actual book. The library bought it or if donated someone did. Only one person can read it at time.
Libraries are attempting to have electronic access. But publishers have been challenging that. Even if libraries limit the number of copies that are 'checked' out the publishers are challenging that also.

I just think Musk is an even bigger "goof" now for appropriating "grok" and "grokking".
So far, I have yet to meet anyone else that made the connection. Or cares. Sad.

Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. "Grok" is a total misnomer for something that doesn't really understand anything.

I always check the license, and I tend to avoid things that aren't licensed unless I know from context that it's public domain - even then maybe that's not the best practice.
But yeah, I want people to respect my licenses so I try to respect other people's.
As far as the rest of your comment, mostly it just gives me another reason to sideeye "AI"

So do I. But so far I have never worked with anyone else that does. I have worked with multiple people that are not even clear on what I am talking about what I bring it up. Additionally there are sub-dependent libraries which are often ignored as well.

Gosh that seems irresponsible. And they do this for commercial code? I'm assuming so. Yikes!
Man, that really is begging for trouble, to my mind, but then I always assume the source code I produce will eventually find it's way into the world so I assume someone will see it. I mean, I don't need that to keep me honest, but it keeps me honest, if that makes sense.

Seriously, it's not FB and it's not here... save for one or two peeps. Or maybe they're smart enough to avoid the lounge, and I'm not. Willing to accept I'm not the intelligent one here.
I always thought about looking into Mensa, but I'm not so sure that's worth it to be honest. Maybe I should reevaluate.
For real though, looking for intelligent peeps so I can have a higher quality of chat. Online bickering with ignorance isn't fulfilling anymore. There's no advancement in that. It's actually revolting and disgusting in my view.
Maybe I'm not being realistic or perhaps I'm too immature to simply ignore the clowns. Will accept that because I seem to attract them. Just want to know where the intelligent people are because so far, they're very, very rare it seems.
Btw, if you say you're intelligent you're not. And if this offends you, you're also not.

Doesn't someone have to think they are intelligent to decide they can accurately assess the intelligence of others?
And what did he say about that? I forgot already.
Anyway, if anyone needs to know anything about Jeremy, they just need to read that post.

Mensa is weird.
The few people I know that were mensa, were not pleasant, mostly large ego and obnoxious.
if you want to have a quality chat on various topics, find local groups with in-person meetings.
Also, being intelligent is different than being informed and be able to talk about stuff.
Again, I know a lot of people who are intelligent but only in their fields, they are not curious about anything else.
Good luck.

Something over 40 years ago now I joined Mensa and went along to some meetings (North London-ish). Meetings were chaotic, childish, and seemed primarily to act as a vehicle for getting drunk or laid or both. Very little indication of different-to-normal intelligence. Didn't renew my membership. Maybe it was just that group, maybe things have changed.

Maximilien wrote: if you want to have a quality chat on various topics, find local groups with in-person meetings. Easier than said than done. I've ran meetup groups before, and I used to check them out. While people don't bicker and argue as much in person, you're not always meeting a genius.
Maximilien wrote: Also, being intelligent is different than being informed and be able to talk about stuff. Yeah. There's more than one type of intelligence though. I totally agree; I would just extend that concept of saying a person that can chat coherently is expressing a different kind of intelligence ya know.
Maximilien wrote: Again, I know a lot of people who are intelligent but only in their fields, they are not curious about anything else. I used to think this, but no longer do. I don't define knowledgeable as intelligent. To me, being intelligent takes a certain amount of introspection that a lot of people don't have. Granted, others may refer to this as wisdom, but after years of talking to non-introspective peeps I'm no longer convinced they're even intelligent by the classic definition. I'm jaded man.
