So how well do you know that cheese?
It goes ridiculously well on pizza, if you take the maggots out.

If you want to Lock / Unlock your task bar, you simply click the one Checkbox menu item ("Lock the taskbar") and it toggles (just as we expect for a checkbox item).
See it here: https://i.stack.imgur.com/V09Rh.png[^]
Two Checkboxes For One Choice??
However, if you want to hide or display Cortana from your taskbar, there are two checkboxes and you have to select one or the other??? !!! what!?!
You can see the Cortana choices in this snapshot from my taskbar: https://i.stack.imgur.com/X4xt6.png[^]
I was attempting to hide Cortana by clicking (toggling) the "Show Cortana icon" but it didn't do anything. It was annoying. I had to click the _other_ checkbox ("Hidden")!
But now, this one makes me laugh, because M$ basically invented these usages and now they don't follow them.

I think you are running an older version of Win10 than I: I'm on 1909 18363.592, and I get a single choice: "Show Cortana Button".
I get a "Show" / "Hidden" for "Search" though, which you don't.

Yeah, this is at work and they seem to keep us a few revs back. So that may be the issue : version 1809 -- 10.0.17763 Build 17763

It could be that the Hidden is to hide Cortana's typing area, whereas the Show Cortana Icon is just to show or hide its icon in the tray?

They seem to be mutually exclusive choices...I can only choose one or the other.

Ok, so poor design indeed

Exactly. Mutually exclusive choices traditionally meant radio buttons. But somehow at some point in time this got lost.
They did something similar with the Search option. The 3 options I see under Search (I'm on 1909) are Hidden, Show Search Icon and Show Search Box. You select one of the three.
I'm thinking these "new" menus allow for items to be checked, but there's no such thing as radio button support. "Progress".

or they've decided to make radio buttons look like check boxes?
why not? they've made so many other things ugly and confusing (even the overall UI)

Yeah, they really have changed some basic things that were great the way they were.
But, all in the name of NEW... I guess.

IIRC, there should be three options: Hide, Show, and Show Icon. You could either show a search box (show) or a smaller button (show icon).
It's changed in later versions, because they've finally split the search option from Cortana. So now there's a "Show Cortana button" which is a single choice, and a "Search" menu with the "hide", "show icon", and "show search box" options.
But you don't expect consistency* from a Microsoft UI, do you?

Yes, but you have to like the new Icons. Yes?
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

One gripe is that Microsoft started leaving "..." off of menu items that initiate a dialog.
They used to be fanatics about CUA compliance and "explorability" of the UI.
The Ribbon was the first step in removing explorability of the UI. Now there is a GIANT list of every possible command with no logical grouping that you can "add to custom". The GIANT list only supports single letter matching if you try to type! Hundreds of options start with "S".
Every thing is "Search" driven. You better know what you want and start typing it in to find it for any Windows 10 feature or program.

I agree and great points all thru your post.
Everything in UI seems just to make it NEW without real plan or design.

It was the Americans who declared their independence from the Britain, not the other way round. If Britain's leaving the EU is called Brexit, then America's declaration of independence should be called Amexit, or some such.
