My laptop's power brick just completely failed. No more power comes from it, and my new one won't be here until Friday.

You're going to have to tap the keyboard very lightly and slowly to save power...

With cars, you can get more fuel if you continually turn right - will it help if he just tips the lappie so the battery is the highest point?

It depends on the laptop and which way the battery is. You have to tip it so the terminal are at the bottom, so all the power can drain out!

That would have added about $100 to the price (it ships from California).

Some laptops work with the cell removed too (but do not forget to connect the cord )...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

The brick itself is faulty and fails when there is a load of almost any size.
It randomly started working last night, but only when the system is off.

What I was suggesting, that maybe the cell should be removed to test to be sure that it is the brick...
The other solution may be the store next (10 min driving) to my home...It cost about $35 with a variety of connectors for (almost) every laptop with the right voltage...So if you just post me the correct voltage (a picture of the cell is probably the better) I can be back in half an hour with a new brick

I tested the brick with a multimeter, and even with no load the voltage would drop by up to three volts. And now it shows a total of three volts when tested with said multimeter.

Oh, and I would have to disassemble the entire computer to remove the battery.

There are a few websites that I go to that don't seem to work for folks outside North America, and HotSpot Shield has worked well in defeating this; however, HotSpot seems to be turning to the Dark Side and demanding a subscription.
I figure the community here woukd know the best free alternative, so I am interested in hearing about them.
Thanks

It's not entirely free, but TunnelBear[^] does have a fairly useful (to me, anyway) free plan.

I don't know about browser extensions, but I think you could configure tor to choose an exit node located in a specific country.
If I were in your position, I'd pay for a subscription for this HotSpot thing because you've been using it for a while and it's clearly been working. If the price was unreasonably high, I'd understand. Otherwise it's the easiest thing to do.
If you choose another app or extension, there's no guarantee that they won't move into a subscription sometime in the future. Everyone has to make a living, right?

NordVPN works well for me. They had a promotion this year where you could get a year-long sub for US $36.

I don't use Opera, and have not been closely following its developments. Why don't you visit the Opera site and do some research ?
