A few years ago when recovering from an operation I used to wake up at night several times. Looking at the clock and see it was 4:13 or 23:57. To pass the time I factorized the time as number (413 2357) from the head.
Yes European clock, No it was no operation for brain damage
413 = 7*59
2357 is prime,
note that 2357 consists of 4 consecutive prime numbers/digits. don't know if there are more with 4.

I have a brother who is teaching high school for 'at risk students' (if they don't get help, they will simply drop out). At the end of the school year, an assessment was done of the students to identify where they stood in terms of basics: reading, writing, arithmetic.
They discovered the kids didn't know how to add/subtract/multiply/divide without a calculator... so, he will be doing remedial studies for a few weeks so they understand the basics.
Oh, and he is the English and History teacher; the Math teacher can't be bothered lowering himself to actually teach the kids.

If this was the soapbox, I would make a comment about how you treat your kids.

I regularly do basic math operations with pen and paper, when it's too complicated to do it by head and fetching a calculator or a computer would be longer than doing it 'the old way'.
I'd have done this one by head, however :p

I'm sorry, but you're an idiot. It would have been easier for you to create a dummy (pun intended) profile and posted "need hlp plz" with this and gotten the answer quicker. None of us would have been the wiser.
P.S. - In the event that you had different answers, you could have created a poll to weigh in on which answer is the most likely. Thereby saving lead and trees.
P.P.S. - I hope you use a mechanical pencil sharpener.

I often to paper calculations, just to keep my hand in, so to speak. When I'm developing games, especially, some of the trig I actually enjoy working out on paper much more than just getting the answer from some electronic medium.

In Q&A you know that the answer would have been to tell you to Google[^] it.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

Dude I have one better for you.. how much time do you work on a PC?... had you ever tried to write a small letter... by hand!!! that's almost impossible, my hand start to hurt after the 4 or 5 first words... and forget about the lack of auto-correct!!

You shouldn't have hand cramps unless you have a death grip on the pencil/pen. You can also get cramps from writing too fast. That's been my experience. And yes, I'm a lot older than most of you.

My alarm clock app requires me to do some simple arithmetic to turn off the buzzer. It tends to make me more alert than just hitting a button.

After progressing from use of tools to engineering, I guess that in Darwinian terms you could say that homo sapiens sapiens has become a mathematical genus. It appears that we are about to be superseded by the boolean genus, however.
Wait - did I miss something?

We can program with only 1's, but if all you've got are zeros, you've got nothing.

This morning. Home improvement store. Checkout. Price plus tax $18.02. I paid cash with a $20 bill and wait, I have two pennies in my pocket. I hoped I get two dollar bills back. No, I got one dollar bill, 98 cents in coins plus my additional 2 pennies back. Asking her why she entered $20 instead of $20.02 for the amount rendered, she responded she was never taught to enter such odd amounts. I gave her all the coins back asking for a dollar bill. She put it on the counter and started counting them. It took her two attempts to find out that it was a dollar. No child left behind!

Yet another sad example of our current school curriculum. I've also had store clerks refuse to take payment with a dollar coin. The prevailing opinion was that it could not be money. Come to think of it, the dollar coin does look like a video arcade token. Where to get a dollar coin? Buy stamps from a post office vending machine. The machine gives them for change.
