I have an Epson V500. I actually use it for scanning 35mm negatives - and it does an impressive job even when not cranked up to maximum resolution.
In advanced mode (the only one I bother with) you can pre-tweak your image before it's scanned to color-correct, enhance contrast, etc. Also, pre-scan-cropping. For 35mm, it can have eight set up at a time.
It makes use of (if you do negatives or slides some day) Kodak's "Digital Ice" technology. It does an IR map of the transparency that only sees scratches and dust. Then it does the proper scan and interpolates away the dust and scratches - distinguishing them from actual parts of the picture that may look similar (like the sparkle in an eye). Smart people at Kodak.

Does it scan photos as well? What's the largest size photo?
Thanks!

It's referred to as a photo-scanner. The bed's pretty big - larger than "8x10".
It only scans - no other bells or whistles. 9600 dpi uninterpolated at max if I recall. I had just gotten into scanning old family photos when Sandy flooded my place. Aside from testing it to make sure it survived I haven't (but am about to) been back at the photos for a while.
Just remember: The photo's surface is part of the picture. If you have a clean glossy image it's great. Anything other than glossy will show artifacts of the surface.

I've had no trouble scanning larger-than-will-fit photos (etc) in sections, then reasembling them in Paint Shop.
(I've got a V600)

Our cat simply made a meal of the entire mole. Anyway, you could take the rest of the mole and dress up as Abraham Lincoln.[^]

+5 for a Tommy Cooper mention. Sorely missed. It was quite incredible that you could see his punch lines coming a mile of and they still had you in tears - just like that.
A friend's dad (yes, I do have a few!) was in the police force and had to see dear old Tommy for some purpose. Tommy gave a momento, a pen. The pen was inscribed "This pen was stolen from Tommy Cooper"
