There's no rule against that. If his site was interesting, we would have said nice things about it and welcomed him. Otherwise, most everyone immediately berates him. Best option is to ignore him or comment on his site if actually interested. Aside from that, he'll either contribute to this site or he'll leave.

It's an unwritten rule: just etiquette: it's like walking into a room full of strangers and shouting "Look how wonderful I am" rather than trying to meet a few people and make friends.
Besides, all I actually did was point out that his registration option was limited.

I am rather wonderful. To be honest, Ill sooner contribute to SO as I just find it much easier to navigate etc. I do really appreciate some of the articles on this site however. Perhaps Ill write a post so that I ain't called n00b anymore. Cause that pla1n hurts.

As are we all: but you wouldn't walk in to a room full of complete strangers and start a conversation by telling them that.
Nathan Smith wrote: Cause that pla1n hurts
See, it shouldn't - everyone is a tyro at some point so learn from it and grow. You're probably smart but you're now in a world where everyone is smart (well, most of us. Well, that guy over there). You get the point? Take it slow.

I really kind of mean it though. SO!! Emm... Newman!! ala Seinfeld.
SO!!! ugh!

Considering he's using it to learn and that was his first post, he hasn't had time to learn the etiquettes. I agree this is a faux pas, I just don't agree with putting someone down for not knowing better. We do have many young people on this site, and older newbies, who at first new nothing about what's done right. Everytime someone posts a programming question here the lynch mob convenes to remind them of the bolded text on top which most newbies, myself included at one point, don't read at first. No big deal in my opinion.

True, but this was all in regards to another post you posted and everyone piled on. We all have our two cents that we have just got to share.

Yeah and that was orig-griff, not me!
Besides, etiquette is important: without rules and boundaries we'd have chaos and anarchy. Or the internet, as it's otherwise known.

I don't understand why that matters... If it's acceptable on his 2nd post (or 2000th post), why is it not acceptable on his 1st post?

It's a poor way to introduce yourself as I have stated above.

How about "abusive"?

"10,774,445 members (80,486 online)"
What if everybody did that? But seriously, why didn't you simply put it in your blog here on CP?
Otherwise, possibly see the "Weird and Wonderful" forum.
What you have is rather hit-and-run; it would be better if you had selected one or two items that you thought were particularly humorous, put them in the post, and then said something like "I have posted more like this on a page over here..." and then the link. Simply posting a link will not get many to follow it (I haven't and won't).
You could have started a deep meaningful discussion about some humorous code rather than inciting the ire of the Lounge denizens.
You'll never get very far if all you do is follow instructions.

Quite a cool idea.
I was tempted to steal it, add a load of social media icons and plaster it with so many advertisements it'd take 5 minutes to load each page "bwhwhahahahahahah" - Dogbert

I genuinely enjoyed it.
I can see both points of view (people thinking it spam and yours).
I think a few people are angry / stubborn and may consider it spam. The way I see it though you are a developer sharing an interest. If it were soley spam you would of buggered off the site and not replied to anyone ages ago.

Yeah, I understand that most people in IT can be quite opinionated hiding behind a firewall. I appreciate feedback from those that are trying there best to break the site or those who appreciate. Thanks.

I think that is a great point. I don't consider it spam. It's the lounge after all.

Why do we even need accounts at all? Ok so we could cleverly cast many votes if you only kept cookies to anonymously identify users, but that's not likely to be a big problem.
