Perhaps to answer your inquiry the fact of such theft is much on my mind. It troubles me that China and of course Russia are stealing from us. Every time I read an article such as this I am reminded of these facts. It seems this is a peculiarity of myself.

If you can take for granted corporate espionage is a thing (and I think we can agree it is), eventually it should stop bothering you, no?
Are the Chinese stealing your unique ideas?

I have little knowledge of corporate theft however we have a justice system re/ such matters. I do not believe the FBI or INTERPOL will arrest Chairman Xi anytime soon. Even so commonality of evil does not make evil acceptable. Further perhaps more to the point I have a hatred of communists as they are a scourge on this world. If Canada stole USA technology I would not be troubled. My original ideas are safe from Chinese theft as I keep them well secured unlike our government laboratories which troubles me greatly.

Just playing devil's advocate: Why?
I mean, I'm with you, it's an evil that shouldn't exist, but ultimately unless it's affecting you personally...in what way does it trouble you greatly?

Russia dropping nuclear bombs onto Ukraine would not affect me "personally" however what sane person would not be greatly troubled by it. As for the "way" theft from USA laboratories troubles me is once again I have a hatred of communists. Once again if our laboratory secrets were stolen by Canadian spies assuming polite Canadians stooped so low I would not be troubled in the least as last I heard Canada is not a communist nation though I have just today learned the exodus of Canadians to USA has increased significantly for political reasons.

Corporate espionage should be as equally troubling to any sane person as Russia dropping nukes on Ukraine.
Gotcha.
BernardIE5317 wrote: exodus of Canadians to USA has increased significantly for political reasons.
Those aren't real Canadians anyway and won't be missed; the rest of us are just waiting patiently for our next elections to get rid of our PM.

We do? I know for example that the US has a legal system which means something very specific.
And there are a vast number of treaties between various countries.
But no idea how a "justice system" fits into that.
BernardIE5317 wrote: I do not believe the FBI or INTERPOL will arrest Chairman Xi anytime soon
Err...of course not.
FBI deals with national not international problems.
Interpol doesn't arrest anyone. That isn't how they work.
And national leaders are always considered to have diplomatic immunity.
BernardIE5317 wrote: f Canada stole USA technology I would not be troubled.
I see. So certainly not a problem when one US company steals from another then.
Doesn't make your use of the word "evil" very clear though.
BernardIE5317 wrote: unlike our government laboratories
Rather certain that anything that is actually a "government laboratory" in the US does go to great lengths to prevent theft.
Now there are many places that do research which receive government grants. Certainly some of those attempt to preclude theft. But many also, perhaps a great number of them, intend to publish in very available journals anyways. There are probably some that blur that line such as DARPA research but some of that is publicly available.
Was there a specific example you had in mind?

What do you call the white line on the outer edge of the road when there is no kerb? (leftpond: curb)
I know what I (and my firefighting colleagues) call it, but I'm interested in the wider world's usage.

That's what we call it, but I'm pretty sure I didn't know the term until about 20 years ago.
And I'd been a licensed driver for 40 odd years by then.

In my state its generally considered a no-passing line. Snow line would not make sense in many US states.

Huh? and huh?
I was referring to the line along the EDGE of the road, not a centre line.
I never mentioned snow.

I meant white line on side of road. If the side of the road is paved shoulder, you can use it stop temporarily (car breaks down, etc). The white separates the main lane from the shoulder (if any). This means one cannot use that part of the road for passing unless exiting the road or the road is temporarily block. States may vary on these rules. Sorry I mixed up fog and snow. Doh.

In Denmark, we simply call it “sidestriben”, the side line or side stripe, as opposed to “midterlinjen”, the middle line/stripe.

In the UK, it's the "Edge line": THE HIGHWAY CODE ... Signs and Signals ... Road markings[^] but there are other names (and functions) if it is non-white.

That's probably what I would have called it in the distant past.
And yes, I've met the yellow and red flavours in the UK and Singapore.
Here, we don't have those lines, but they do paint the kerb red for "no stopping".
