A for Adam! Correct!

It's both -- cryptic, y'know?
Or is it dipstick?
I always get those two mixed up.
Same with "I" and "A".

The normally accepted CCC rules do state that words have to be in a dictionary. Merriams, OED are the normal choices.

Would be terrific to find those rulez again. DD's old Bellcross link is:

Those word couldn't be that famous after all...
I ever read from Joyce part of the Ulysses, until a felt asleep...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

As is often the cause, there are obscure literary references and foreign language usages.
From my perspective, I don't understand how 'no German chauffeur' becomes 'river'; chauffeur to driver, yes, but why drop the 'D'?
And pointless alphabet to rune; again, fine. Why drop the 'e'?
|
|
|
|
|
Looking back, those are the understandable bits: Germany is Deutchland so "No German chauffeur" == "Driver losing the "D".
And "Pointless Alphabet": if you accept "Rune" for alphabet, then removing teh cardinal points (North, South, East, and West) is standard stuff, so "Rune" loses the "E" and becomes "Run"

D is the international letter (used on cars) for Germany (Deutschland). Pointless would be E for East being a point on the compass. However, alphabet to rune. I think that a single rune would be a character, not a whole alphabet?
I don't want to be discouraging, but cryptic clues can get really silly if you're not careful!

Shouldn't the "N" also be removed from RUNE? Isn't it also a "point"? I guess the answer is because the N can't be removed. But then, it can't really be considered "pointless", can it?
Yeah, it does sometimes get silly and picks hairs a lot of time.

My reply was not an attack, it was my view. A question was asked, a question was answered.
Not being from Europe, I don't understand the cultural references, such as the letter of origin for a car. Being a computer science person, I would not have got rune... pointless should remove both N and E.
I have understood some answers in the past; I still struggle to understand this one.
Again, my view.

I did not percieve your answer as an attack. I answered you after 5 hours as I was completely off line for that duration. Nor did I have any intention of being some smartass - I missed the fact that your question had been answered by others. But at least I posted a nice photo

Fair enough....
I read the response from my phone and don't follow links, so I didn't see the pictures.
As an example of 'cultural reference', consider the following cultural crossword clues.
1. On your head or under your toe,
Culture affects where it will go.
Either way, used in snow. (8 letters)
2. Shorten also and line; stay warm (5 letters)
They are both related.

Did I just fix two production issues on mental autopilot, or did I just dream about doing that? I can't really tell anymore... I'm operating on about two hours of sleep, maybe less... Either that, or I'm still asleep and only think I'm awake and at work...
Man, I think I need another three-day weekend... That day off yesterday apparently wasn't enough.
This rant was brought to you by the letter Zzzzzzzzzzz......

By the way, hope you'll get some sleep soon, autopiloting for long periods is unhealthy
