I had a bad cold which did not let me even think of smoking for a week or two. After that was over, I cultivated this aversion and simply did not start again.

A few years ago I got an 'E' cigarette, which really helped me quit. Now I don't smoke at all, and only 'vape' if I am duty driver at a function where alcohol is consumed. Two Christmas's ago - I got the short straw. This year, folks are coming to us.

I smoked for 23+ years, and quit about 10 years ago, before my son was born. You really have to be ready to quit, for it to work. If there is one shred of not wanting to quit, then you will most likely not quit.
I used the gum. It really helped me, and did not make me sick to my stomach, like the patch. It took me about 4 months to quit, using the gum.

Stop Smoking, a very good idea! Still I'm fighting with it. It has the smell of Advertising, but I like to mention "Allen Carrs". In my environment I know 6 People who stopped Smoking after reading his book. All of them not esoteric and very realistic People....

I'm also -unfortunately- a heavy smoker. Stop doing this self destructive behaviour is not a bad idea

It is not "self-destructive", unless you want to classify driving a car like the same.
It can be an unhealthy habit, but given the amount of unhealthy stuff out there, I could not care less. I don't want to live 200 years healthy, I'd rather have five minutes of fun.

That's my attitude as well, or used to be, but since I got into the running and in particular swimming it's become painfully obvious what it's doing to me and my breath control. My Gran smoked three packs of major a day and lived to 93, but she died of emphysema. I spent some time in hospital recently, and it brought the memories back. It's not about living longer, it's about enjoying the life you have.
So, I'm planning to go full-on Rocky 4 this Winter; running in the snowy hills around Zurich, pounding bags, lifting weights, starting international incidents over personal grudges.... 
I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, sh*t-kickers and Methodists.

I don't have children or a wife to worry about, that's probably part of why it's taken me so long to get my head together and just quit; you can rationalise self-harm a lot easier when it's just you.
I have two main motivating factors; I am getting quite seriously into distance running and outdoor pursuits in general, in fact it's more true to say that I always have been, but lately I'm finding it difficult, huffing and puffing, and I don't want to lose that part of my life that gives me so much joy.
Also, I'm seeing my folks at Christmas, and I want to be able to hang out with my Mum and not smoke, she hates it when I smoke and it guilt-trips me to bejeezus.

Good luck!...I quit in 2012 and never looked back...it's amazing how much money you save after  ...once you're past 3 weeks, it's all gravy and sugar free gum after that.

I hate them. I can never remember whether I installed Stupid Salamander or Lackluster Lynx.
Just use version numbers when referring to them FFS!
And Android names too. 
At least browser versions don't affect me directly, they can increment the numbers as much as they like.

I agree. I use 13.04 on one of my machines and have never been able to remember its name. Quick Googling and it's "Raring Ringtail".

I agree -- and I tried to tell Microsoft that when they thought that dropping version numbers in favor of "Windows 95" would solve all their problems.

I actually use Linux a lot nowadays but yeah, this naming convention is a bit ridiculus. It doesn't really matter though, you just have to remember your version # or run: sudo lsb_release -a
That gives you the code name and some other description info (mine):
