Edit: I removed the profanity. However, I don't think it is cool to make fun of dead people, especially brave people, who died trying to further science and space travel.

I'd think it's the setting, rather than who the target of the jokes is, that would make it controversial. But then, I wasn't around when it aired.

That's kind of a hypocrite thing to say...
Germans died too, joking about them is as bad as joking about any other (even if YOU think they were the enemy).
With that logic we could joke about Russian astronauts (because in the space race they were the enemy).
That said, I don't have a problem joking about the dead. We do it to poor Leslie all the time.
Not that I'd crack a dead person joke to a friend or relative of the deceased, of course.
Although humor IS a (dangerous) way to relieve the tension.
