Hi Mike!
Are you planning to host WordPress yourself on a dedicated server or a VM?
I tried it on my VM at 1&1 running Windows Server 2003 (root access) and gave up after much pulling my hair out and gnashing of teeth. An ex-colleague of mine said it was a cinch setting it up on his unix VM which kinda figures, as this is how this thingamajig was developed. I think it was PHP, MySQL and Apache Webserver.
What are you're plans regarding this?

Manfred I wasn't planning on hosting it myself was going to use their servers. I guess I haven't researched it enough yet. Still trying to make up my mind if I want to let my site go or not.

From what I've seen so far I'd have loved to use it, but I just couldn't get it installed.
Maybe using WordPress servers would be the way to go for me also. I'll have to look into that.
Do you by chance remember that guy from CP that had us throwing names around for his food/cooking blog?
I think he also used WordPress and "Bytes & Nibbles" was what he called his blog in the end.
I can't remember his user name though. Does that ring a bell?

I vaugly remember the food guy but don't remember who it was, got a hard enough time remembering my own stuff.
I'm going to do some more research before committing I'll let you know what I find if you like.

I did for a while and never had any problems - it was great for just being able to shove stuff online without worrying about it.
Code formatting - there were a couple of free add ons that did good hassle-free formatting.
My advice: It's free - go and have a play!
I moved off the free wordpress site and now host wordpress myself on my Synology but I only moved from the free hosting as I wanted to use my own URL
Which doesn't have much on it right now, as I lost all of my (paid) hosted stuff when I stuffed up & cancelled the account without checking I had backups

Wordpress is great just for about anyone as a website content management system. But maybe the real question is what do try to accomplish with having a site? If you want to generate a lot of traffic to your site and build an online business then keep in mind that Wordpress "as is" will not build an online business. It's missing a do-able start-to-finish BUSINESS process.
Surely, you can slog through the mountains of business building advice and tools that are out there. But for most WordPress users it all ends up being too much.
So, despite the dazzling display of Wordpress features, the reality for most (non-tech) people who want to create a web business with Wordpress is that they need to adhere to an easy-to-follow, all-in-one, proven, ethical webbusiness-building system (not a get rich quick scheme), tailored to the WordPress platform, to get (1) a significant amount of traffic and get (2) targeted traffic (example of such a system: WealthPrinciples dot net).
Otherwise you will end up having (and building) only a WordPress webSITE (or BLOG) but not a webBUSINESS.

No I do not want to build an on-line business, I understand what I need to do that.
I just want it to post some tutorials and app offerings, etc.. Not a lot of traffic may 100 visitors/day type thing.

r versus random.
sw versus streamWriter, etc...
Our shop only allows single character variable names on iterators, and even then, a meaningful iterator name is desired, especially if you have iterators in nested statements. You have to have something meaningful in the name.
What's your take on this?
My personal opinion is that you should use meaningful names. I should not have to go to the variable declaration to remember that r is random - you get the point.

Sometimes even a variable name like random may not be enough.
What does random stand for -
Random temperature value?
Random foreign exchange value?
Random number?
Random forum post number?
So use r and consult the documentation anyway.

Usually use something meaningful except when I'm testing and idea I use dave. I search and replace before I let the code loose.

Never heard that rule before. Seems pointless if you ask me. What value is added by having single-character variables? (I assume you mean like "foreach (a in Addresses)")

The greater the scope, the bigger the name is as good a maxim as you'll get:

Just curious as to why you can't actually spell out random instead of using "rnd". Are you really coding that fast and time is so crucial that you can't spell the word out? Just curious, Nagy.

No, not fair enough. That's a cop-out. Meaningful variable names should be used everywhere. Programmers who claim that it's too much typing need to either take a typing lesson or hope that I never need to maintain their code.

If a block of cohesive code has several levels of nesting and a variable name is used in most of them, it is nice to be able to fit your block of code into a single screen so you can see everything without scrolling back and forth. I sometimes use small variable names for better readability. A comment can always clear up the intended use of the local variable.

"For better readability" is the key to your statement. Better readability is a prerequisite to better understanding. And better understanding is directly related to maintainability.
Now consider for a moment that a maintainer is visiting your code for the first time. A couple of things: the maintainer may not recognize your algorithm and the maintainer may not know your coding style. So the easier it is for the maintainer to understand your code, the faster the error (why else a maintainer?) will be corrected. Meaningful variable names help. In short loops, I have no problem with small variable names, but only for integer indices, not for statements like foreach ( Address address in addresses ).... Once the form foreach ( Address a in addresses )... is allowed, bad things happen to understanding.
