I love laptops -- haven't used a desktop in years. Both my work and home setup is with dual monitors, the laptop monitor used as a parking space for apps I want to keep open but infrequently used. Separate mouse and keyboard. I love the portability, the fact that it's quiet, and if the power goes out, ok, the monitors go dark but I don't lose anything.
Supposedly, if you work here more than a year you can take the laptop with you if you leave. And yes, it's a small company, I can't imagine a large company doing something like that.
Why does this company make life so bloomin' awkward
if the power goes out, ok, the monitors go dark but I don't lose anything.
Since the laptop has its own battery, get a UPS, and hook only the monitors to it. You could probably go for quite a while.
At home, my desktop has its own UPS, and I have a second one driving just the extra monitors and network gear...by splitting the load, I can keep going for at least at hour. Something really bad's gotta happen if this isn't enough for most situations.
I have both, and dread the times that I have to do anything on the laptop. The trackpad/buttons on the thing are horrible so I rely on a wireless mouse. The keyboard is not nearly as comfortable (judging by typing errors/speed) as the 21 y/o HP keyboard that I got with my first windows PC. (thank goodness for PS/2 to USB adapters!) Every few years I take it apart and clean it.
Using the laptop, I also find that I really miss the other monitor...of course I could travel with an extra monitor...nah!
Since you aren't mobile, ask for a docking station.
writing on a forum like a SoapBox,Tw*tter... As the world does these days.
If there are easy alternatives... where is the problem with a closed soapbox?
If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?
Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you
Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.
I agree there should be a place to say things that are not appropriate for the lounge, but I found the soapbox recently was just a place to go argue with somebody else about political views.
Anything not related to politics was quickly swept onto page 423 and never seen by most people, so kind of makes it pointless when it's like that.
The only people it was useful for is people that want to argue for the sake of arguing. If those people actually gave a crap about what they were arguing about then they would actually go do something about it, rather than just voicing their opinions on a site that is dedicated to programming.
Perhaps the soapbox could come back but with an initial rule that politics is not suitable conversation. At least until people can learn to mix up their conversational topics a bit.
