It depends on your needs, if you need a good screen don't buy a cheap tablet.

Avoid the Chinese ones: they are fine to start with, but long term reliability (i.e. once the guarantee period expires) is poor. Every Chinese electronic device I've owned is dead, and while "disposable commodity" is good for manufacturers, I'm old enough to want stuff to last a while...
I have to say I'm impressed with Surface - to the point Herself is getting one for Christmas to replace her Samsung Galaxy Tab S, and that's still working perfectly ...

FWIW I've got an 18 month old Teclast T8 tablet that's still flawless. To the extent that it might matter it was one of their notionally higher end models ($250, 8") and has a solid metal body not cheap plastic.
