Have you gone into device manager and had it scan for new hardware (expand the computer node and see if it is even the correct class of device, and see if it needs it's driver sw updated)? I don't think XP will automatically detect the chip change...

I have. Windows 7 automatically detected the new processor, and everything's matching up to the real hardware, apart from the absence of virtualization.

Flash your BIOS if there's a newer version available and update your motherboard drivers. Just 'cause the BIOS says it's there and on doesn't mean it adheres to up-to-date standards.
Cheers,
Drew.

Thanks, I'm about to try that. I think I've got an interesting few days ahead of me.

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel] | FoldWithUs! | sighist | µLaunch - program launcher for server core and hyper-v server

Thanks for the tip. It's working now; I can run Virtual PC.

The CPU, chipset (motherboard), and BIOS all have to support VT. The OS does not matter as long as the VMM will run in the host OS.
According to:
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E7600
"Intel® Virtualization Technology requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, virtual machine monitor (VMM) and for some uses, certain platform software, enabled for it. Functionality, performance or other benefit will vary depending on hardware and software configurations."
I have written several articles on the subject but the current marketing and specific technical information seems a little thin. I have had queries from readers about this too and I am trying to get some more information from Intel.

It's nice to be off of work for a few days over the holidays, but riding in the car for hours gets old. I think this holiday season my family is setting a record for the amount of driving we've done in a short period of time. I think we'll hit over 40 hours of driving. The only thing that makes it tolerable is that I can do some fun coding while cooped up in the car. Maybe I'll actually be able to enter a program into the Windows 7 contest.

Good luck
I hate traveling for long as well, but I do like once you get to the place. Discovering a new city or going to one after a long time is very nice.
Regards.

I do not have a work permit for Australia. Will the employers be interested in hiring me? I can get the visa and other things done by myself in case employer does not provides one.
Also, how tough is it to get a Aussie work permit for an Indian these days? Sometime back there were news about Indians being attacked, is the situation bad over there or was just a media hype?

It's time consuming and expensive to sponsor someone for a visa - I think the company would still have to prove they couldn't find anyone suitable first - so most employees just don't bother (unless you have a very specific skill that they need).
So apply for a visa first yourself - many job applications on Seek actually specify you must have a visa in order to apply - so getting that babby in your hand is worthwhile.
we don't discriminate here, so it's as hard for an indian as anyone else (in principal, at least, I think there are some agreements with the UK for exmaple)
The indians being attacked IMO was 90% media hype. there were indians attackec, for sure, a small number, and there were certainly in the same time other nationalities attacked - so singling out one atack and calling it racist with no proof other than the ace of the victim is a little Murdoch if you ask me. certainly the reports I saw had the police denying the majority of reorted incidnts as having a racial cause.
Good luck!

Thanks for the information.
Will be logical/practical to initiate visa process once you are selected for a position? I understand that the process will take time and the recruiter will not wait for that long. Still I am asking this since I am not dying to get there and hence will not prefer to waste money in getting visa and then look for job.
I guess with this condition of getting visa after the job offer, I stand no chance of getting there. Right?

Australia had a site a few years back to solicit immigrants. I went through the questionaire and in the end was rejected as a potential immigrant. I'm too old, apparently, to be wanted in Oz.

Well, most of the work is in Melbourne and Sydney, but it's expensive to live there. I'd say you need to get a visa, get to one of those cities, but ask here where to live so you're safe, and then look for work in person. There's enough devs that unless you're outstanding, I don't see why anyone who needs someone ASAP would bother to wait and hassle with getting you over here.

Aren't you a Canadian citizen? Why don't you just move to Toronto and look for a job?
Canadian citizens can work in the US too (via the unlimited and quota-less TN Visa). So that's another country you might want to look for jobs in.

Change.
A part of me wants to strike out and go to the moon. I did not know that about the US. I might just do that, but I need to talk my wife into leaving Jordan anyways. Heads wiser than mine will know her unnatural love of the hell-hole known as Jordan.
