I have to make a 70-mile round trip to/from work every day. The speed limit the entire way is 65mph. Since I drive a big American sedan, I drive conservatively, at 60mph in the lane that both does not impede speedier traffic nor traffic merging onto the freeway. I try to never cause the engine to rev so high as to cause the transmission to downshift to compensate.

This morning, I was cutoff no fewer than half a dozen times by people that seemed to be upset that I would be doing 5mph less than the posted limit on a four-lane freeway (with me being in the 3rd lane from the left). The pattern is a common one. Come up fast from behind, tailgate me (to the point that I couldn't even see his headlights), flash lights (as if that was gonna do any good), honking horn, abrubtly change lanes to go around me and then swerve back into my lane barely missing my front bumper.

As I neared my exit ramp, I moved into the exit lane. There was nobody behind me in the lane, but a guy was coming up fast in the next lane over (the lane I was just in). Just before I got even with the concrete divider wall, this guy passed me and tried to move into mny lane - keep in mind that his turn signal wasn't even on.

He managed to just barely squeeze in front of me, but over-corrected for his abrubt lane change, and started showering sparks on my car as he careened down the ramp bouncing off the concrete retaining wall. Imagine my satisfaction when he sped up (!), and just as he passed the end of the ramp, a cop car was coming down the frontage road. The guy got lit up, and I pulled over to add my 2 cents to what the cop saw.

The cop's partner walked back up the ramp, and did a cursory paint color match with the now damaged retaining wall, and came back to take a statement. Meanwhile, the other cop was writing out a ticket and had called a tow-truck to come and get the car. It was driveable, but the guy driving it was a) driving on a suspended license, b) with expired registration, c) and expired inspection sticker, and d) no insurance. Add on top of that an unsafe lane change, speeding, and reckless driving, and he's going to get a pretty hefty bill from the city. No matter, though - I'm sure the retard will be back on the road later today, and will eventually succeed in killing someone.

Amusing anecdote - the cop that was taking my report was shaking his head as he wrote, and I asked why. He said it continues to amaze him that more people aren't shot due to pulling stupid traffic stunts in Texas. I said, yeah, if I didn't work on a military base, I'd be carrying, and he said, "Then that makes this guy even luckier than most."
