I built up a Windows 8 Tablet (from a Dell Duo) and upgraded my HP laptop to Windows 8. I've been using them both quite a lot over the last 3 weeks.

Windows 8 works pretty well as a Tablet. It has a handful of usability issues:

1) The Bing Tile does a good job of searching BUT once you select a search item and get a webpage, back doesn't take you back to the Bing app. This sounds small, but it's really annoying.

2) Several of the built in apps were clearly designed, built and tested by folks under 40. They have tiny fonts and no options to change the font size. I'm seriously considering ordering a custom set of prescription glasses for the Windows 8 tablet.

3) You can only close apps with the mouse. Yes, really. This one just boggles my mind.

4) Some apps don't run correctly on the Duo (Pinball Fx for example). I suspect this is a driver issue with the Duo.

5) The Kindle app is unbelievably slow. Turning pages takes forever. I realize this is beta-ish software and that I'm using an atom processor on my Tablet. But this configuration is similar to the RT class tablets, so it leaves me wondering how well the Kindle app will work on an RT.

None of these issues are a deal killer, just really annoying.

As a laptop, Windows 8 is okay. I thought it would be terrible, but it's about the same productivity as Windows 7. The learning curve is small and it sort of makes sense.

I tried several of the apps that create a start menu on the desktop. They are unbelievably bad. Don't expect one of those apps to make Windows 8 just like Windows 7.

One thing that's clear from using the laptop and a tablet, is that some configuration and settings are awkward to get to from a mouse. A windows 8 laptop would be much easier to use with a touchscreen.

Other than that, I have no objections to Window 8. It seems like Microsoft made some fairly reasonable design decisions. But it clearly needs a little bit of tweaking to be less annoying.
