Which is why I qualified my statement to debit cards; and why I urge anyone shopping online to get a CC for that purpose and to pay it off in full each month even (especially) if they otherwise use their debit card exclusively.

Are you sure? If it is a credit card (not a debit card) then the card issuers (i.e. Visa or Mastercard) operate anti-fraud guarantees, and as long as you reported it as soon as you became aware of the fraud, you should not have to pay for fraudulent transactions.

I went to a restaurant once where my card was mysteriously duplicated. I only had one disputed purchase on the card and all was well within 10 days of the transaction, but as a rule I do a quick once-over on my transactions at least once every 2 days if not every day just to make sure nothing out of the ordinary is occurring that I don't know about. I wish you the best and hope everything works out. Cheers.
