I like to think I can understand it, but the truth is I can't. I've tried to describe it to my son, I'll get the blank look, then the "so like it's really, really, ...., really far then", so I guess I was successful?

I got there in stages with my lot. How far to the moon? To the sun? To the next nearest star system and so on. They know some of the numbers but I'm pretty sure they really don't understand what they mean.
And also it's a more powerful motivator than mere profit?
Perhaps but if they use profit as a motivator they have to share the profit (so less for the persons in charge).
I think profit is a bigger motivator than religion but the people on top use religion so they can keep the profit for themselves and don't have to share it.
In the end it all comes down to either power or money, and very very few "religious leaders" who incite violence actually do it for the religion part.
My definition: religion appears to be a set of beliefs held by a large number of people usually based on some sort of faith in something that is not measurable, using the 'scientific method', and that generally contains ideas that are held as taboo to question within and about the particular religion.
Given my definition, it seems fairly easy to then manipulate a large number of people to do something they would not do outside of this group/collective belief system.
“That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”
And with that being said, understand then the frustration of people that have a belief system that DOES encourage thought, discussion and dialogue being continually lumped into 'religion'. If the adherants say, "It's not about religion" they are ridiculed further...
Being an Indian, I have been influenced by the sayings of a saint of India, called Swami Vivekananda, who visited the US back in 1893. He said "Religion is the manifestation of the divinity already in man. Religion is the idea which is raising the brute unto man, and man unto God". See here[^].
Don't for a second think that relious wars aren't spurred on by the promise of profit.
