Researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London studied 1,100 workers at a British company and found that multitasking with electronic media caused a greater decrease in IQ than smoking pot or losing a night’s sleep.

There is a fascinating book out which describes numerous studies about these effects:

One of them mentions how that electronic devices distract you because you know you can switch away, so since you are using energy to think about not switching away you end up focusing less at the material at hand. It's all just indicators and of course it isn't exact.

It's more about attempting to focus more.
