Have you noticed North Korean's are all really skinny, well all except one.

@richardmaccutchan Well, let's see:
1. started the day with the win 10 taskbar at the bottom of the screen squnched down where the icons were not visible: re-booting did not change this ... could not re-size it, or change it by moving to the right, left, top, and then back to the bottom of the screen. after installing the latest win 10 patch: it is restored.
2. since about 4 win 10 patches ago, I cannot adjust the screen brightness in the usual way, or by using the Lenovo hot-keys. given my serious vision problems ... the reason i purchased this high-end laptop ... this is a real problem.
VS 2017:
0. the notification for "optimizing" start-up times keeps appearing no matter how many times I select to permanently disable it. i reported this to MS: their response was: "sent to triage"
1. today I started a WinForm control library project, added a Component which I set to inherit from TreeView ... then, I added a WinForm app project to test the component in.
somehow, with standard debug build settings ... and no references to anything web ... within five minutes i could no longer compile: with the error message that the UserControl preview window whatever could not be loaded from some web namespace. had to rebuild a fresh solution.
no amount of fiddling withe build settings, and re-building.cleaning cycles would fix this. 2nd. tome this happened, and never happened before VS 2017.
If I could make up the various nightmares I've had, and my friends have had, I'd be writing for Hollywood

I had approx. half a million windows open in the middle of some gnarly stuff and popped downstairs to grab a bite. I come back and my machine is freshly rebooted after a windows update.
I stopped pressing Ctrl+S after every keystroke years ago. I think it's a bit sad we're now being trained to start doing it again.

Now I use to disable Windows Update service and only reactivate it twice or three times a year, when I know I will have time to actually install updates.
Having a Lenovo laptop, I also disable Lenovo system update; they tend to change the system management console at each update, and everytime some functionality is lost in the process... Quite upsetting.

Well, Glad (but not, also Sorry for you Chris), but you finally got the wrap of this! ONCE! Happens frequently world wide! Windows Update causes world wide havoc! Mainly to the little people who realise that their computer overnight stops working. They have no websites like yourself, they are being ripped off! Millions of computer repair shops, world wide! They tell customers that their computers are dead and gone, people buy a new computer, and, the 'Broken' Computer is sold down the chain, updated, for a profit to the Middle Man. The cause of this all is Inadequate Update procedures by Microsoft, in particular when it comes to OEM OS versions.
I think it is high time that a Veil is being lifted here!

I have had to start saving a lot recently because the linux box I am using is crashing apps and itself so much that I am comparing it to Windows 95.

Run W10 in VM. Disconnect network while doing important stuff. Test stuff on another VM if network required. Connect only if you don't mind, or do want updates.

It's an incredibly user-hostile system   . I've started using elementary OS[^] whenever possible to avoid this sort of stuff ![Java | [Coffee]](https://codeproject.global.ssl.fastly.net/script/Forums/Images/coffee.gif)
Surely something like a monthly update day (with reminders the day/week before) would be appropriate for everything except emergency worst-case security patches? I don't mind having to restart to install updates, I just want control over when and why my machine reboots.

I turned off automatic updates long time ago after having similar experiences in past. I do only manual updates(once in a month or two).
Apart from windows, I even turned off automatic updates for other softwares. Last year CCleaner's particular update made headlines due to security issue(Hackers injected their code in build to do .....).
Also browsers. Some add-ons/plugins not compatible for new versions.

You can't disable updates with Win10. I did that on one of my systems, and after ~6 months, it noticed and crashed itself to force a reboot so it could re-enable updates again.

Ditto here. My main laptop at home spent a brief week running Win10, but got rolled back to 8.1 the day after MS force fed it an update. They had to turn it on from a full power off, and left if on after they were done. No more Win10 for me except for my experimental laptop.. and they're about to lose that one too.

Actually this 8.1 came with laptop by default. It's been 4+ years & everything is going on smooth & fine. If something happens, I'll go with Linux. No more plan for Windows. Right now I use 99% FREE & Opensource softwares only in my laptop.

Just turn WU off Chris unless you want a particular fix, then you can go get the kb update yourself.

AFAIK, you cannot turn off updates under win10 anymore. Even the registry hack did not turn it off on my machine.

Just disabling the Windows Update service seems to have done it for me. Have had it off for past year, and only turn it on temporarily to update at my convenience. No problems.

Yep, it got me this morning as well!...3 VS projects open, half a dozen notepad scratch areas open, at least a dozen web pages open, multiple tabs in SSMS open with work in progress.
With AI being 'the thing' these days it seems to me that Win10 could use a bit of logic to avoid causing unsaved work to be lost by a forced restart.
The forced restarts are really my only gripe with Win10. I've tried many settings (in vain) to keep it from happening with no joy.
One other problem I get is that many times after an update, I have to go and reset registry permissions for some of my customized right-click menus.
