I was clumsy, and while doing some lock picking practice I let go of the wiper tensioner, and it went "ping!" nad flew off under my desk.
Can I see it? Nope, it's there somewhere, but so are a load of cables. And I just know that if I go rummaging through cables too much, something is going to get a sudden power down ... so I'll shut it all down first. Tools ... NAS ... Login ... Admin. Oo! The CPU is a bit warm @65C and 1200RPM on the fan, I'll have a look at that as well.
Start shifting stuff and the tensioner drops into view. Great. Now, let's see to the NAS.
That's easy to say, harder to do as it appears to be a big ball of dust and cat fur ... Hoover time!
Unplug, dismantle, hoover, reassemble.
Start everything up again, and the temperature is dropping nicely - 57C and the fan is down to 900RPM - much better.
So the moral of this story is: dunno. Chuck a tensioner under your desk from time to time, it helps your hardware last longer?

The NUC sitting on my desk used to be so quiet I often wondered if it was turned on at all. Nowadays the fan's running almost constantly at full speed (and you know how it works - the smaller the fan, the faster it's gotta spin, and so the noisier it gets). I can't keep my finger on its side unless I risk burning myself - if CPU temperature utilities are to be believed, it can often run (and stay) at around 80-90C. Yes, Celcius.
I've been meaning for weeks now to open it up and blow air through it. I'm afraid I might find a spare cat in there.

The dust bunnies have achieve sentience, and are running their own candidate in the city commission election this fall.
I believe it's the combination of greyhound hair (I have two) and long white cat hair (said cat looks just like the lure used in greyhound racing) that has led to the emergent phenomenon behind and beneath my desk. The last time I mumbled something about shutting everything down, moving the desk, and giving it a good cleaning we had a power brownout over a three county area.
Since then I've carefully swept the hair over the top of the desk toward the back.

Even on a desk they get a good coating - it takes slightly longer. The whole point of a fan is to suck in coolish air (with crap in it) and blow it on hot things. Some of the crap sticks.
The moral of the story is to set up a maintenance schedule that involves physical cleaning on a regular basis: perhaps a monthly or quarterly routine ... I must do that.

Apparently, in SQL Server Management Studio, you can delete servers from the drop down list in the "Connect to Server" popup.
I still had servers from my last employer, servers that no longer existed, test servers... Basically everything I've ever connected to on this laptop.
In the past I've downloaded a small application that was specifically build to clean up that list (so apparently other people have the same problem).
It turns out you can just open the list, hover over a server name and press delete on your keyboard and it'll be gone (without warning).
My life would've looked a lot different had I learned about this some nine years ago 
I'm not sure in what version of SSMS this was introduced, but it seems it's been available for at least five years.

This is the sort of thing that, in hindsight, should be so obvious - every application should allow you to do this sort of thing.

Yeah it should be obvious, but I know it wasn't possible in 2005, probably not in 2008 either.
And now that it is possible they've implemented it in a way that's not obvious at all

Works in outlook too when you are typing the to: address, allows you to delete old recipients

I wouldn't feel bad about not knowing it sooner, it's hardly intuitive.

Actually, the SSMS team should feel bad because I (and many others) didn't know this!
It's a huge design fail.
How about a button [Organize] or [Manage] that opens a separate popup which let's you add (for later use) or delete servers.
Should be about a day of work

Or better, a right click on the selection line ...
I wish Chrome would do that with it's search / address bar: I type "News" and it lists the items I've been to most often with "news" in them - which is fine - but I had reason to go to a very local news site every hour for a day or so, and now it's pushed the BBC and NYTimes down a row.
