Well I have always used if the work gets done all is good. However the attitude of those higher up is if the work is not done in regular chunks someone is being lazy...  (parent company does not do technology)

ugh, i hate those situations. Parent companies make better customers than they do management.

As someone who writes code for other people (now commercial, govt at a prior job); my bosses need a timesheet so they know how much to bill our customers.

That makes sense. I did keep track of my hours when I was contracting, but i never kept track of times, just dates. Nobody ever asked for more than that from me.

my time sheets have always been in the form of just a day/billing code grid with space for a free form comment. So Wednesday 5h on project A, 3h on project B. But not worked on A from 8-9:15, 10:40-11:20, 13:10-14:25, 14:30:16:20, and B from 9:15-10:40, 11:20-12:05, 13:05-13:10, 14:25-14:30, and 16:20-17:00.

The joy of Government contracts being in chaos at the moment. As a company that used to do things who now rely on others, the worst part of it we have to account for every 15 minutes, so going over to the production and doing a quick test experiment to see if thing X does thing Y are a little hard to account for. We are run by accountants, I swear! I think the best comment was from the Drawing Office Manager "We were bought out by people that talk about work but don't do it'

Ouch. We only had a 30m resolution at my last job and normally only track to that level at my new one which is coarse enough resolution that most nuisance items round down to 0 and we don't need to decide if a bathroom break should be charged to the project we wrapped up before getting up or the one started when we get back.

I always told them I had car trouble. I was late getting in it.

Before we moved offices I could stay all night (I did once). Now I can't, the security Agents will terminate anyone on site after 6:00pm!

I view the nominal forty hours per week as an average and certainly not a minimum. I may work 36 hours this week but I will work 44 or 50 hours per week soon enough. I really don't sweat it and neither do "they" as long as things get done in a timely fashion. The good thing is we are our own customer - all our work is done for internal use. That has its bad aspects but they are minimal compared to the benefits.

So we're doing this learning event called "Developing Chatbots 101" for students and newbie developers and I wanted to make the event more interesting and engaging.
Previously, we've been doing Kahoot (A quiz game) for many events but that's kinda old and boring now.
One thing that I thought of was to use color charts and pictures, divide the audience in small group and ask them to assemble the workflow of Chatbots using those pictures and chart. Well, my fellow speakers disagree with me thinking that'll be a total waste of time 
So I need some expert advice. What do you guys think would be a good activity during the technical sessions? 
P.S. There's a presentation planned for introductory purposes and later we also have a hands-on demo. The activity was supposed to be in between the two mentioned above.

Nothing to do with chatbots, but all pretty AWESOME.

Don't go there in person. Give a URL to each student and them to do ask whatever they want online prior. While everyone is busy pop-out out of nowhere and tell them how awesome your bot is. If they look irritated, run.

reminds me of my days working for large companies, E&Y and suchlike
once a year, "as a bonus for your hard work," they would:
- ship us off to some hotel in a foreign land
- do "team building exercises" (or later they gave it some other obscure name),
- and we'd all fart about doing stupid things, of course inter-departmental, lol lol, happy happy
- at the end say how good it was and how we would use these ideas back in the office
- and of course after the "[also fully organized] free and easy day"
--> fly back home, go back to work and do exactly the same things the same way as before.
If it's a frigging bonus:
- why TF do we have to do all this stupid sh*t?
- why TF can't we do what we feel like
- why TF fly to a foreign country only to spend most of the day in a hotel conference room?
It's all nice, everybody acts happy - because they just want it to end, "FFS, please just let it f*g end," because what is the real result: NOTHING! WASTE OF FARKING TIME AND MONEY!

In your case same advice: don't bother, give them an extra hour for lunch - as much will come from that as stupid exercises. It's bullshit, make the people do something for the sake of filling up the day (or making myself sound smart)
If you really want to win the people over best idea:
skip it completely and let everyone go home an hour or two earlier
- people WILL appreciate THAT as AWESOME
playing games treats the audience like children that need to be kept busy [till mommy finishes work and comes to collect them], it sucks, it's stupid, it's a bad idea all around to treat adults that way - more foll those that fall for that sh*t.

At a guess, tax breaks. You can generally claim training costs against your company tax, but there has to be a "training element" to it. The free day is the reason you get it - that and any duty free purchases you make - the other day is how the company gets the flights for free.

yeah that was the other side of the bull, "we have a bonus for you!" and they fly 200 people to Bali or Bankok to play stupid games, but no way are they paying full price if anything at all. (With big firms it's 'sponsored' by their clients, an airline, a hotel group, a training company - as you say they paid little or nothing).
"no thanks, I need to stay back, got stuff on those dates."
"but we've already paid for it" (more bull)
"oh well, bring your wife... don't worry, I won't ask for compensation for not going."

Sure, but then the HR geniuses can't write up glowing reports on what a wonderful job they did for the team spirit.
Just remember that they don't do it for you; they do it very much for them.
If it's cr@p, put in your own report, professionally and clearly explaining how it achieved none of the aims it was intended to achieve, and that you believe that the money could be spent/distributed more effectively.

I'm not sure if you are talking about "Chatbot" as some kind of AI backed, or keyword-lookup based, interactive facility, or if you are talking about an app or service that connects a person to a client.
