A bool is used when you want to store the (true/false) value of a condition, for later reference. For example:
bool bSystemWasOK = checkIfSystemIsOK();
...
if (bSystemWasOK)
doSomething();
...
if (bSystemWasOK)
doSomethingElse();
Storing the value of the check in bSystemWasOK saves you the effort of calling checkIfSystemIsOK() repeatedly. This example assumes that the system state continues to be OK throughout the execution of the code fragment.

I'm starting to see. The problem I'm working on is a magic square program.
r1 1 6 8
r2 5 7 3
r3 9 2 4
I'm comparing row totals to column totals to test for equality between rowsum[] and colsum[] arrays and storing the result in a bool variable. I'm having a hard time seeing how to loop through the comparisons and using the bool variable at the same time.

Hi,
I download the .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package in the station, but when I try to run a .NET C++ application I got an error message
"Application has generated an exception that could not be handled."
The same application runs fine in my development station which has the full Visual Studio .NET installed. (It was ver. 1.0, but I also downlod the .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package and SDK 1.1 as well).
Does anyone know what else I have to do to run the application outside of the development station?

I found out that I have to download NET Framework Version 1.0 Redistributable Package to run the application. After I did that, it works fine.

So what you are saying is that an app written against the 1.0 framework will not run if the machine only has the 1.1 framework installed? Does the framework not have backwards compatibility? So any apps currently being targeted for the 1.1 framework will not work with the 2.0 framework?
Does that mean that we are going to have to distribute the 21MB+ framework with every app just to ensure that the version the app requires is on the target machine, or is MS going to distribute all old versions with the newer OSes? Sounds like a pile of BS and a good reason to continue avoiding .NET.

I don't think it is true for all apps. Obviously, if the app depended on some API present in 1.0 but has been changed in 1.1, it won't work. Here[^] is the list of all changes made to the API that might break 1.0 to 1.1

Hello,
I'm trying to maximize my MDI child frame upon creation. However, changing the CREATESTRUCT values (e.g., cs.style |= SW_MAXIMIZE) does nothing, and cs.x = 5 causes errors?
Also, I tried to override the ActivateFrame function, but this too didn't work.
My MDI child frame contains two views in a splitter window.
Is there another way to do this in .net?

guys, i need help with running a command line application from within my VC code. I know how to do this with VB - using the Shell command, but hours of scouring the internet havent helped me in finding an equivalent in VC.

Sorry to have to ask these, but Project Sheets (and working with tabs in general) is completely knew to me and the MSDN is vague on some of these things.
Okay, so I have my Property Sheet set up and I've added 5 Property Pages to it. In each page is a list control (report style) that has to have headers for each column. I can set the headers with the first one (PropertyPage) but none of the others (PropertyPage1, PropertyPage2, etc). Is there something that I'm missing as how to reference those particular pages?
Next, adding buttons (yes, I asked this before; sorry for the repeat question). I know how to create the buttons, but for some reason they're not showing up in the Propery Sheet at all. I don't want buttons in the Property Pages, but rather outside of them on the Sheet itself. Right now, it looks something like this:
pWnd = GetParent();
m_btnRead.Create("Text Goes Here", WS_VISIBLE | BS_PUSHBUTTON, CRect(10, 50, 100, 208), pWnd, 1);
I've also tried replacing "pWnd" with "this". Nothing. No button anywhere. Again, am I missing how to correctly reference the Sheet?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

How and where are you inserting the columns in each list control?

For the first Property Page, I have this:

I think I got it figured out. I needed a separate function for each page in the Property Sheet.
But I'm still having a problem with placing buttons on the Property Sheet. No matter what I do, the button will not show up.
Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Correct. For each page/tab on the sheet, a separate CPropertyPage object is needed.

You need the WS_CHILD style, WS_TABSTOP would also be helpful if you want to be able to use the tab key to get to your buttons. Also, make sure the rect you specify is in your sheets client coordinates, and not off the sheet somewhere.

Hello gurus,
I would like to know how to read and write bytes on a USB connection device?
I do ::CreateFile(strUsb, GENERIC_READ|GENERIC_WRITE, 0, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, 0, NULL) where strUsb contains the path to the port "\\.\[path] I obtain my handle, then when I try to read and write bytes via ReadFile and WriteFile, nothing happens.
Can any one show me how to read and write bytes on a usb port?

to write to an usb port....the application should know tye existence of the usb driver....
for that u should have written the inf file for the driver which gives the detailz abt the driver.....ofcourse u can avoid that if u r using the windows builtin drivers.....

Hi,
I've got a project where for some reason unicode support is turned on in the code, I've come to this conclusion because it is using the "W" versions of certain functions. I've done a search for #define UNICODE but didn't find in the code. I don't see an option for this in the Visual Studio Preferences either. Is there another way to turn it off?

Did you search for both UNICODE and _UNICODE in the .h, .cpp and .dsp files?
