also, can i make datagrid editable, so that user can write into it.
i basically want to do a insert operation
i have adatatable showing the table on my database db1.mdb
now i want that if user wants to insert a row , he simply types the values in the next row and pressses button "btn_insert". at click event of this event i want to insert the row which user had entered in the datagrid

i had made a project which has 2 forms in it
form1 and form2
in form1 i had made a "oledbconnection con" which is set public
now, i want to use its getoledbschematable method in form2
i want to display names of all tables in my database in form2 datagrid. con is my connection to that database which is in form1
i had also done "imports system.data.oledb"
in both forms
ds is my datagrid in form2
my code snippet in form2 is

What is your problem ? How would you like us to help ? ESP ? Magic ? It's possible that the problem is that you've not called databind on ds, but who can say ? You've not said what the problem is, showed us the method you call, or anything else that would help us to help you.
Your code is pretty terrible in any case. Why are you putting data access code in a form ? Surely the fact you need to create an instance of a form to call a database method is a clue that you have an exceedingly terrible design happening here ( no design, more like ). You should not declare all variables at the top of a function, do it as you need them. Why don't you just not create an intermediate dataset at all ? In an ideal world, all of the above code should look like this:
ds.DataSource = MyWellDesignedDataAccessClassWithStaticFunctionsAndAStaticConnectionWithLazyInitialisation.GetSchemaTable();
ds.DataBind()
Man, non-case sensitive languages make me feel dirty.
I recommend you stop programming until you've read a book called Code Complete.

i want to use the connection of form1 in form 2
in form2 i want to display the schema of the table which user had eneterd in form1
for this i dont want to make a new connection
i form1 i had given user facility to browse any database file
based on that i will make connection(which is hidden from user. he just had to browse file)
now after selecting database, all the tables in that database will be apperared
when user clicksone of that table , form2 will be open in which he will be able to seehis schema
for this i want to use the same connection i had made in form1.
therefore i am using

I tried to help you. To reiterate: your design is awful. When you create a NEW instance of Form1, it's not going to contain any data entered into the instance of Form1 that was on the screen, how can it ? you need to move data access into a seperate class, and if you need data from Form1, you need to store that somewhere, or at least pass it to Form2 on initialisation ( or give Form2 a copy of Form1, if you must, assuming it still exists ).

This is one more good reason to create a class for database connections, and have it contain a static connection object.

Hi all,
I have a problem here.The scenario is like this.
I'm using a datagrid to display the data that i've queried in the database. I've limit the row of the datagrid into 12 rows. Therefore, if i have received more than 12 data from the database,the data will displayed in multiple pages,so i have provide the forward and previous button in my screen for the user to see all the data that have been displayed.Besides, i'm also have provide the checkboxlist for each row of datagrid so that the user can check only specific data at one time.
My problem starts when a user has check one data at a different pages.It means how I want to populate the data if the user has check one data at the first page, one data at the second page and another data at the third page.How to gather all the data that have been checked first and then start to perform the transaction????
Can anyone help me give some guide.....

I have windows form control bound to a business object. Upon initialization it displays the data from the business object in the text box as its bound. But when I update the vale in the text box the respective data member of my business object doesnt get updated.

I wrote a document management windows system. I am storing documents into the SQL server database (such as images, word docs, excel etc). The user then can brows what is in the database. I have a listview control which displays the documents that is stored. I want to be able to have the user view the documents. I have the fallowing code

I am able to display the any kind of document, but the problem is that the browser gives "Action canceled" error then it opens the document with the appropriate application program. Any ideas how I could get around this problem.

Not such an easy task. Controls can contain child controls. And "Value" is not so easily defined because for something like a ListBox with multiple selections you would have a collection of selected values.
You start by enumerating each control in the form Controls collection. This will give you a list of all "first generation" controls on the form. But that will not always list all controls, because if a GroupBox (Panel, other container control) exists, the Form.Controls collection will not include the container's child controls. So you would then have to enumerate the GroupBox Controls collection to get it's children. But then a GroupBox could also contain a child GroupBox, and on and on ad infinitum.
An interesting exercise in recursion ...

Hi, I am recently looking for a validation function for Canadian Postal Codes in VB .net environment. The validation will make sure the postal code is a valide post office postal code. And if some elements of the address like province, city name, street name are provided will
perform some kind of lookup to make sure the Postal code in the address is valid.
Anybody knows where I can get hold of the source code or any reference object that prvides this kind of function? Thanks.

You might want to search for a web service that does this instead. Because this information can and does change. The code is not that hard, it's the database behind it holdling all that information that's the problem.

Your question is quite generic.Whenever we have to validate a Character or numeric data.It should match with already existing values or we have to validate it with some set of rules.In the priror case you need to maintain a database with valid information.If you already have a database then its good,what you got to do is just write a function which will do comparison queries on the input information.

I have a table that I'm storing the actual names of classes in as a string. from the selected record I'd like to be able to instantiate a class from the string in the table. I've found examples using createobject(), but in all those cases the class had to be registered first. I have a couple of classes and would like to be able to just use the string stored in the table instead of a select statement so that when new classes are added, I don't have to change the code. does anyone know how to do this?

You need reflection to accomplish this:
System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().CreateInstance("FullyQualifiedTypeName")
Note that you need the Assembly instance in which the class which should be created resides. If this is not the executing assembly than you will have to use some of the other static functions of Assembly.
