I have a very simple question that I've been trying to figure out how to do. I want to take a 9 digit number and format it as xxx-xx-xxxx. I tried the following code, but it is not working.
Format(CStr(m_EmpID), "###-##-####")
Any suggestions?

Hello,
If you are using VB .Net you could use:
strnumber = strnumber.Insert(3, "-")
strnumber = strnumber.Insert(6, "-")
Where strnumber is your number in a string format.

just as an aside, it's considered really bad form these days to used a ssn as a customer id. many industries are being made to change their system to move away from this type of architecture. banks, insurance etc.
not sure if this is what you're doing, but from your post i'd say it's a pretty good guess.
just something to keep in mind.

I'm actually writing an app to lookup employees by name to retrieve the social security number for use with our system. Yes I agree about getting away from ssn and this is the exact reason this app is being written.
There is a big push to get rid of ssn as the employee id in our company right now, and we're removing the id from all printed material and using this app to look up a number when needed.
We're planning to replace the system in about a year and this is just part of a temporary work around.

Im again! how can i search for a record through a database using vb.net. I want to make a textbox and make a button to search a that specific name that is typed in the textbox. How can i make this?? When the database finds that record than the info of the record will be typed in all the textboxes ex. Name etc..

Hello
I need some help on writing an app that uses .dot files(word templates) in wich I add some data from a database and then prints the result. So far I came up empty on using the .dot file in my program or printing the result. I'm rather new to Windows programing (but i have experience in C++ programing). If you know of any way I can pursue the ideea further please post a reply.

The .DOT files are only usable inside Word. I would suggest writing an application that uses Word automation to load the template, fill in the fields, and the print it.

hello, I have a problem about writing and reading from a text file.I am makeing a button to save the text from the textbox to a specific text file. Then when i make the form_load with a reading stream because i want to load the text from the textfile i saved before. An error is shown that it was already been used by another user. what can i do with this sh*t!!?? Please feedback me

You haven't posted any of your code that writes the file, nor reads it. Without that, it's pretty impossible to tell you what you're doing wrong. I'd be willing to bet you didn't close and dispose of your stream object properly, thus leaving the underlying file handle open until the GC gets around to disposing the object for you, thus closing the underlying handle.

I'm no expert on the subject, but...
It looks like you're attempting to paste the image into the Slides collection of the ActivePresentation. The Paste method your using is expecting the clipboard contents to be a Slide object, not an image.
I would suggest trying to paste it to the ActivePResentation.Slides(Index).Shapes collection using that collections Paste() method.
I can't tell you how to do it, because I've never controled PowerPoint through automation before...

I’m writing an application that is to be installed on a number of multi-user Active Directory XP machines. There are a number of config parameters which need to be set up on each machine so I’ve created a simple form to edit and save the value into the registry in a key under HKLM\Software\.
My problem comes when saving those values. Administrators have permission to write to that key but normal users don’t, resulting in a Security Exception. What I’d like to do is be able to check write permissions in advance and stop the values for being changed on the form, or even dim the option from the menu.
Is there a way for a given registry key I can check if the current user has write permissions without having to open the key and waiting for an exception to be throw?

There is no built in support for Permissions (or ACL and ACE) in the .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1. (It's coming in 2.0!)
There's an example of wrapping the Permissions Win32 API's functions, structures and constants here[^] on GotDotNet. It's in C#, but can be converted to VB.NET.

This reeks of homework. You haven't given any details of the code you've already written (a code snippet might help), so there's not much we can do to help you. We also don't know what concepts have been covered in your class. If we tell you a method of how to do something that wasn't covered in the class, your Prof is going to get VERY suspicious about where your code really came from.

Sort Asc (ascending 1-100) or Desc (decending 100-1) ORDER BY whatever you called your "Score" column (SQL statement)
You might check the documentation for whatever your database software is to find out how to do those two statements. Hope this helps!
