Several years back I was doing a lot of driving by myself. I get bored listening to tapes all of the time so I stick to the radio but my travels took me through areas of poor radio reception.
So I started litening to books on tape. My local library has them for checkout, so I do not even bother with the high cost of the audio books.
Since that, all of my driving seems to go by much more pleasantly. I do not even get bothered by all of the idiots on the road, because I am not worried about preventing them from cutting in front of me. I just listen to the story and keep my distance from te car in front.
This even works well for my trips to work which only take 15-30 minutes depending on when I get out of bed.

I use a text to speech program that can save to WAV/MP3 and download a book/story to my MP3 player  Great for reading (erm... listening) on the move

What program do you use? I have been thinking about something like this for some articles/memoes etc. Does this work with a lot of different text formats (word docs, web pages, pdf, ebooks)?

I have written my own. It's currently under development and not at a state that is releaseable. At the moment, it uses a richedit control ands supports plain text, RTF and PDF. I am reworking it to be more flexible so you could provide a COM object that reads a specific format if one isn't provided.

When I was young, I loved to read. However, after writing software for 20 years, reading technical manuals has changed the way I read. I tend to skim, which ruins reading for pleasure. An author has a real challenge getting into my head nowadays.

Ahh...! That's to bad, I try reading something every night in order to get the current problem(s) out of my head (at least temporarily).
Here's some authors for you:
1) Anne McCaffrey (fiction and sci-fi): Anything she has written; because she does not spend pages explaining things before the story begins, but introduces them as the story unfolds. Try the Dragon Riders of Pern series. (Note: She is known as the author who made people love dragons, and lives on a horse ranch in Ireland call Dragon Hold).
2) Alan Dean Foster (fiction and sci-fi): A master writer. Although he has written many books I don't care for, his common-wealth series are worth reading (particularly the Flix series).
3) Lawrence Watt-Evens (fiction): A master writer. His ethshar series is a fun read, they all deal with things, or situations, that have gone totally wrong. His dragon series is also a good read (we're not talking dongens an dragons here).
Books like Moby Dick may be considered classics, but they are some of the most boring books I have ever read. After all who wants to read a book where the author spends two or three pages describing a room. I want a book that grabs you from the start, a book that makes you intimately familiar with the characters (so you care about them). Otherwise I skim the book, which means: I made a bad purchase, because it bored me.
In general (supposedly) fact based books are boring, biographies, etc... (but not always). Fiction based books (depending on the author) can grab your attention and make you wonder whether you can do with a little less sleep (just one more chapter), assuming a good author wrote it.
In case you have not notice, I love reading. Especially sci-fi/fiction, if that's not available I'll read: Discovery, Popular Science or Popular Mechanics (well actually I would read those anyway, amongst others).
I was trying to reinstall your love of reading, if we talked face to face (and you aren't to stubborn), I might have a shot.
P.S. Don't try to preform a book burning in front of me, I consider that taunt amount to sacrilege (and I'm not a religious man).

Once there was time when I loved reading books and stories.
All those written images mixed inside my head, and produced so many new ideas, that I had to start writing stories myself.
Two months ago I finished my first SciFi novel[^]. My short stories are on a web site[^], because there are not enough good texts for another book, yet.
When I'll have finished writing down all those ideas, I think I'll start reading other people's stories again.

That's nice.  Too bad my German is limited to Guten Tag, Auf Wiedersehen and Gesundheit.

Too bad, my English is limited to daily technobabble on CP. If I translated my stories, the result would be either too bad for native speakers, or contain a whole different plot. 
Maybe one day a really bilingual person might happen to like the book and translate it...

The meaning of Gratis is free of charge. In the mentioned context it means, that when a bookshop orders the book up until 3 p.m., it will arrive at the shop overnight (to be sold the next morning) while the no additional fee has to be paid ( libri is a wholesale for books, mainly distributing them to bookshops ).

If you need CListCtrl for your work, it is, of course, work-related. But it's different if you just read about it, because you like CListCtrl so much that you want to spend your time with it.
BTW do you already have a CListCtrl T-shirt, with a screenshot on the front and code on the back? That could become the uiltimate must-have for all CListCrtrl fans.

Some of the people here are obviously living in an uptopia. My days can not have enough hours. I have so many ideas I would like to work on and whenever I get a chance to get some work done, my girlfriend suddenly appears between me and my monitor...
