Hi Everybody,
I am working on a project whose main purpose is to aggregate data and select data records (based on users' selection cirteria) from several large data tables. The data originally are text files and would be imported into database by the application. I don't particularly care which database engine to use at the time being but it would be nice to use some standard engines (e.g. MS SQL Server) in case there is a need of accessing the database from other applications in the future.
Here are my questions:
1) If speed is the main concern, what kind of method should I use (ADO, DAO, or any other approach)?
2) If I use MS SQL Engine, do I need some sort of license from Microsoft? Do users need MS SQL Licenses?
3) I read some database sample codes and the first step is, in general, to define database in Windows Control Panel. When the application is distributed to users, do they have to go through the same procedue, or can a database template be included in the application?
I searched the internet and couldn't find satisfactory answers. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can provide some suggestions or point to the useful articles?

Go for ADO , please dont wake DAO from grave anymore lets give it a peaceful sleep.

MS SQL is certainly not a "MY-SQL" ;P but wont your company take of these issues?

you need to register it in the user end too, i've been doing them manually.. but i think an alternative should be there.. lets wait for a better reply.

Hi VuNic,
Your reply is very helpful and is much appreciated.
The project is kind of "freeware". I don't want to, if it is at all possible, add any extra cost in both my end and users' end. Can I still use SQL commands in someway, or do I have to code all those "select" commands by myself? By the way, I am using MS VC++ .Net 2003. Thanks.

SQL is not a property of MS buddy!, all these DDL,DML are common for everyone..its just a standard(Structured!) way of manipulating your database. when you want your product to be totally free of cost at the user end, go for my-sql.
good luck

Is it possible to instal VS2005 Pro without uninstalling VS98 (v.6)?
Thanks!

Hi,
It's possible. And I think, it works fine. A friend of mine has the two IDEs installed and running without any problem.
Cheers,

"Actually, there are no serious issues with having both platforms and IDEs on
the same machine. I have noticed a glitch in creating a Service Setup
project in VS.Net 2003 with VS.Net 2005 installed, but it seems to have no
effect on the end product. However, there is definitely a bug in VS.Net 2005
with regards to creating a Service Setup project that prevents it from being
able to install correctly. I get around that by using installutil instead.
Also note that I've only observed this behavior with regards to Service
Setup projects."--Kevin Spencer,Microsoft MVP

Hello.
I am an inexperienced C++ user in need of desperate help. I have to code an application that generates midi notes using a markov chain, play them, and then generate simple visuals to represent these notes. I am really struggling to get started on this application, especially making my alogrithm. Any help, ideas, code, whatever would be greatly appreciated!! Sorry this is a bit vague but i have next to none experience using his language.
Thanks!!!

Hold you mouse over the 'Articles' menu above here, and select 'Search' when the menu pops up. Then search for 'MIDI', and you will see a bunch of articles to puruse and get your bearings.

Ooooh.
That sounds like a nice touch of sarcasm. Or irony. Or one of those other "wicked humour" things. I never did know the difference.

It wasn't meant that way, honest. With the topic he posted, there is just too much information he needs to grok before he can really get started, and I was trying to get him going in a direction where he could ask a more specific question. He did say 'inexperienced'.
Good luck, ric ric.

Ah.
Me, I would probably have gone with the "sarcasm" approach. But then I never claimed to have patience. My wife's a teacher, but I'm too much of a bastard for that.
