If you are responsible for 50+ websites, and a few of them go down once in a while, you'd need more phones and pagers than that

"Manage" is such an authoritarian word... I prefer to think of what i do as more like gentle guidance...

Agreed. I dont manage, I get managed, managing is the job of a manager, I am not a manager, nor do I want to be a manager!

Don't aim low! You can be in control and still make code.

Wishful thinking...Plenty of managers think they're still effective at producing usable code, but they don't realize that the rest of us are a) snickering at how out of date they are, or b) tearing our hair out because we have to run along behind cleaning up the mess that was made because our manager couldn't dedicate enough time to doing it right. That's if you're being a good manager. If you're not managing well, then maybe you can write better code.
If you ARE succeeding at both, then you are probably neglecting the wife/kids/girl on the side, and that's not too good either.
You really can't do it all.
Note: I'm not bashing...just trying to inject a little reality.

Well, the sad thing is that i agree with you.
Whenever someone goes to management it tend to lose "the picture".
I am fighting very hard not to.
Maybe because the team is small, only 6, i still have a major role on code, only problem is that the code i managed to get done, is done at home at night. So...

Even though I have 5 or 6 websites, I don't necessarily manage them. Well, that is.
